GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Volunteer Manager provides professional staff support to volunteers and acts as the link between employees and other volunteers. They serve as the supervisor to all volunteers, keep records of volunteers including their number of hours worked and their duties.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Uphold the mission of the Animal Rescue League Shelter and Wildlife Center (ARL) throughout all responsibilities of the position
- Provide leadership to the overall volunteer goals and functions of the ARLWC.
- Manage current volunteer population.
- Recruitpotential new volunteers through community outreach, events, and free advertising opportunities. Establish relationships with various community groups to recruit new volunteers.
- Develop and implement new and innovative methods for recruiting and retaining volunteers.
- Hold weekend Volunteer Information Sessions (4-6 per year) on an on-going basis at times/days suitable to potential new volunteers.
- Volunteer Manager will interview and screen applicants to find the best possible volunteer candidates.
- Train volunteers on an on-going basis to support the needs of a growing department and enhance the volunteer experience.
- Ensure volunteer coverage is provided for events and typically attend those events (Most events are held on evenings and weekends).
- Ensure volunteers are properly trained and assigned to perform their job.
- Handles situations that require volunteer discipline to ensure that all policies and procedures are followed.
- Attend and participate in monthly volunteer meetings.
- Develop and publisha monthly e-newsletter detailing volunteer activities and recognize volunteers for an outstanding performance.
- Develop new and creative ways to reward volunteers for special achievements and ensure the recognition is given on an on-going basis.
- Report problems and recommend changes that would help the program in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate volunteer database.
- Maintain an open line of communication between all staff members to discuss issues, problems, and ideas.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Wildlife Center Directoror the Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
- College degree in a related field required.
- The ability to communicate with, supervise and empower volunteers to be effective in their roles—experience with volunteers preferred.
- The ability to work cooperatively with different types of personalities.
- Knowledge of how to manage and coordinate volunteers and projects.
- Willingness to learn to appropriately handle non-releasable wildlife in public situations.
- Animal handling experience a plus.
