Where we have been:

The Good as Gold Ceremony was established in 2009 to recognize the spirit and achievements of local volunteers and nonprofit organizations. The event is intended to 1) offer local organizations a worthy platform by which to recognize the efforts of community members that make their organizations better; and 2) recognize the efforts of exceptional volunteers and organizations in Springfield. Each year, approximately 300 individuals gatherto recognize the efforts ofover 75volunteers, nonprofit organizations, and businesses.

Since its inception, the ceremony has been a joint effort between the UIS Volunteer & Civic Engagement Center and the Junior League of Springfield. In 2015, the United Way of Central Illinois became a host member.

In 2014, we began recognizing Springfield businesses that support volunteer efforts and charitable giving via the Good as Gold Business Honor Roll. The number of businesses on the Good as Gold Business Honor Roll has more than doubled since its inception;in 2016, wecreated the Golden Distinction to recognize the most outstanding business in each of three size categories.

Where we are going:

The Good as Gold Committee has worked hard to grow the significance of this event over the past 8 years and we are dedicated to making this the premier volunteer recognition event for our community. To attain this goal, the event and the award recipients need a broader platform on which to have their efforts recognized. In 2016, we created a special insertthat included award winners and select biographies, and acknowledgement of our sponsors. The insert was distributed in the May issue of the Springfield Business Journal (5,500 subscribers).

For 2017, we plan to extend the recognition of our winners by including the insert in both the Springfield Business Journal and the Illinois Times (41,100 total distribution).
