Wissota Study Update

Joe Kurz gave us an update at our last board meeting.

The Leech strain fish are doing well as are the WI strain. It appears at this point that Wissota will receive a total of 5000 muskies late this summer/early fall. Half of these fish will be PIT tagged. All of them will be fin clipped.

Joe confirmed that PIT tags will cost $3.25 each. Our club will order the tags directly from Joe’s supplier. It’s up to us to raise the needed funds to meet the quota of tags for these fish.

Your chapter needs your financial support. Please make a donation.

Rearing Pond Update

Len Rubesch reports that everything looks good at our rearing ponds on Hwy 40.

On June 8, we received 6000 muskies averaging 1” to 1.5” in length.

Last year we received 2000 fry and harvested 1000 muskies.

This year’s increase in numbers will be a good test of what the pond can do.

This year’s muskies will go to Clear Lake, Cornell and Holcombe flowages.

Topwater Challenge

By all accounts, our first annual topwater challenge was a success. We had good topwater weather with some clouds and a good breeze. Many of the fish were caught mid day.

We had a cookout from 1pm to 3pm and no one went away hungry. I heard many folks say they had a great time and would like to make this a yearly event.

THE RESULTS OF THE TOPWATER CHALLENGE

1ST PLACE...... Jon Olstadt (42" 34” 33.5”)

2ND PLACE...... Fred Johnson (39.5")

3RD PLACE...... Jason Smith (37.5")

4TH PLACE...... Len Rubesch (34")

5TH PLACE...... Jim Bunch (31")

Help Needed at the Fair

Our chapter will again sell Ranger boat raffle tickets at the Northern WI State Fair July 12-16. This is a good fundraiser for the club so we need help from members to man the booth. It’s very easy to do, no “hard sell” involved, just be there to sell tickets.

If you can help, please contact Jeff Bunch. 715-839-7003 or

Kleeba Chapter Challunge

The Kleeba State Chapter Challunge was held June 24th and 25th on Lost Land and Teal, Hayward WI.

Joe Heil caught a 46” on day one but our team could not come up with another fish.

We placed 3rd. The winning team from Between the Lakes Chapter had a 42” and 37.5”.

Despite the slow fishing, a good time was had by all.

THANK YOU to the New Jersey Chapter, The WI State Chapters Alliance, and Len Rubesch for the financial support of our Wissota Muskie Strain Study.
