Introduction


The decline of the docks

N.B. This information can be found at the start of the gallery. In order to make notes on the other sections you will need to explore the whole gallery.

·  Explain the advantages that containerisation had over earlier methods of transporting goods.

·  Make a list of the other changes that contributed to the closure of London’s up-river docks.

·  Use the images projected onto the wall panel to help you describe the physical effects the closures had on the local area.

·  Explain why Billingsgate fish market was re-located to the docklands area.


The creation of the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC)

·  Describe one of the plans to regenerate docklands before the creation of the LDDC in 1981 and why this collapsed.

·  Explain why the LDDC was created.

·  Find out what the specific aims of the LDDC were and how it planned to achieve these.

·  Make notes on the initial problems it faced.

Changes to the infrastructure

·  Gather information about the different ways in which transport links – both to and within – the area were improved. Consider: roads, railways (overground and underground), bridges, tunnels and air travel.

·  List other ways in which the London Docklands Development Corporation (LDDC) improved the infrastructure of the docklands area.

·  Explain why these improvements were so important to the success of the regeneration project.


The Enterprise Zone

·  Explain what the Enterprise Zone was and how it was intended to speed up the regeneration.

·  Find out why newspaper and publishing companies were attracted to it.

·  Gather information about other types of businesses that moved into the Enterprise Zone in the early 1980s.

·  Describe the style of the developments in this early phase of the regeneration and some of the building materials used.


Residential housing

·  Explain the residential housing problems that the area faced in 1981.

·  Consider how far these were solved by the LDDC and developers.

·  Describe the achievements of the Coin Street Action Group.


Opposition and conflict

·  Explain why print workers objected to the setting up of a new printing plant at Wapping and what action they took.

·  Consider why many in the local community felt alienated by the regeneration of the area.

·  Find out about one local community organisation set up to address their concerns.


The Canary Wharf project

·  Explain the ways in which the proposals for the development of Canary Wharf were different to the first phase of the regeneration.

·  Describe the techniques used to construct the estate.

·  Use the models, interactives and panel with sample materials to help you to describe some of the landmark buildings on the estate.

·  Explain the reasons why the project almost collapsed in 1991.


The effectiveness of the regeneration

·  Describe how the regeneration has changed the physical, economic and social structure of the area.

·  Make lists of what you consider to be the successes - and the failures - of the regeneration.

·  Evaluate the methods used to regenerate the area and how successful you think these have been.
