Patient education is my passion. I use different strategies so patients can learn the best. Hands on, handouts, verbal, etc. I am the Asthma expert on my unit. I am on the Asthma committee and bring back the most up-to date information to share with the staff. I had our unit order the Asthma booklets so there would be standardization throughout the health system. I helped to develop the asthma kit, which we have on our unit to assist patients for teaching. I re-enforce the use of peak flows and the use of spaces /inhalers since resp. therapy cannot always teach are patients. I always volunteer to take challenging patient education opportunities IE: Non-compliant diabetic who had been admitted multiple times. I gave him a “Diabetic Book” and then went in and talked with him. Found out he wasn’t able to read, but the book was helpful since it had lots of pictures which showed him the correct foods to eat.
Assisted with the revision of the asthma discharge navigator.
