2016 Summer Reading Program

2016 Summer Reading Program

Dear CCSDStudent,

2016 Summer Reading Program

Summer is quickly approaching and everyone is making plans. Plans will be made for vacations, summer camps, and quality time spent with family. Now is the time to make a plan for reading. This summer Charleston County School District students are strongly recommended to participate in the Get in the Game: READprogram honoring our 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

Research has consistently documented the importance of summer reading. Students who read recreationally during the summer have success when the new school year begins. Studies show that students who do not read during the summer show a significant loss over the summer break. The purpose of Get in the Game: READis to encourage students to recreationally read over the summer to prevent reading loss and boost student achievement.

CCSD Students’ To Do List:

1)  Sign a pledge to participate in Get in the Game: READ.

2)  Keep a log of the books read on the attached form starting May 13, 2016. Make sure youinclude the number of pages for each book read and give feedback about the book read. You can find more forms at www.ccsdschools.com or your school’swebsite.

3)  Turn in your reading log to your fall 2016 teacher by Friday, August 26,2016.

NOTE: In order to promote the School Library Connection, the Get in the Game: READincentive is coordinating with the public library reading programs to encourage students to participate in both summer reading programs. Students can turn in a copy of their reading log to the public library and will win prizes for hours read. Charleston County Public Library summer reading programs are found on http://www.ccpl.org.Each page read converts to a minute read. Summer Reading participants may read magazines (the pages should contain at least 50% text), newspapers, as well as online reading (books, newspapers, magazines, ebooks, blogs, wikis, etc.)

Charleston County School District’s summer reading program is enhanced with our numerous e-books from Capstone Digital, the creator of the myOn Reader program featuring interactive books athttp://www.myon.com and MackinVia at http://mackinvia.com. You will receive password information from your school teacher librarian with this letter.

Suggested summer reading lists can be found on your school’s website or will be sent home with summer reading information.

We can’t wait to hear about all of the AWESOME books you have read this summer.

Be prepared to share this information with your teacher when you return to school.
