Dear Parent

THE SHEEP AT SCHOOL DAY

Tuesday June 20, 2006

In support of an Australian Sheep Cooperative Research Council initiative, ShentonCollege will be hosting three small flocks of sheep at school. The idea is to promote science in primary industry by bringing some rural activity to students in the city.

Students will learn about (and see) Bioclip wool harvesting from Mike Neisbitt, Lake Grace.

Hear about a sheep stud breeding program for White Suffolks from Peter Dowdall, Narrogin and see some sheep dog training and trials. The students will be engaged in English, Society and Environment, Art, Science and maths activities. Following a BBQ lunch at UWA the students will participate in some sheep nutrition labs and microscopy labs at UWA. These are being organised by Dr Ian Williams’s people.

The event will be covered by The Countryman, ABC Landline, ABC Country Hour, the POST, the Ed Department’s newspaper and UWA News. The College newsletter will acknowledge all sponsors and providers.

Following is a permission slip allowing your child to participate in the day. Travel to and from the University of Western Australia is by bus. The students will be supervised on the day by: Gabrielle Barrett (English), Trevor Whittle (Science), David McRae (Maths) Gary Adamson (Art) and myself.
