Although you may wish to look after the person you care for at home there may come a time when this is no longer possible. Once a decision has been made to go into a home you will need to consider what kind of accommodation offers the right care and surroundings for the person you care for.

Homes looking after more than three people must be registered (this requires them to be inspected by Social Work Services). It is best to use registered homes. Sometimes a home is ‘dual registered’ which means that it is allowed to operate both as a nursing home and a residential care home

Residential Homes

Residential Homes are suitable for people who can no longer live at home and need some help with getting up and washing etc. but who do not need skilled nursing care. Residential Homes may be run by Social Work Services, private businesses or voluntary organisations.

Nursing Homes

Nursing Homes are suitable for people who require nursing care and are staffed by qualified nurses. Residential Nursing Homes may be run by Social Work Services, private businesses or voluntary organisations by law they must be registered with the local Health Board. When choosing a home it is essential that you and the person you care for visit any home you are considering. Check that the home is registered. The home should have a report of its annual inspection which it should be happy to let you see. You should also involve Social Work Services at this stage.

Check list of things to ask about

·  Can the person bring personal belongings such as furniture?

·  Are pets allowed?

·  Can residents have their own TV or radio in their room?

·  Will the person have a single or shared room?

·  Do the bathroom facilities seem adequate?

·  Are there tea making facilities?

·  Are visitors welcome at any time?

·  Is there a garden for residents to use?

·  Does the home seem clean and comfortable?

·  Do the staff seem friendly and competent?

·  Do the other residents seem happy and active?

·  Are there good local facilities such as shops and buses?

When you have decided on a home there are some things you can do to make the person you care for feel more at home there.

·  Personalise their new room with their own furniture, pictures, ornaments etc.

·  If possible have the person you care for visit the home a few times before they move in.

·  If the person you care for knows any of the other residents, ask if it is possible for their rooms to be located near one another.

Care Homes in the Stirling Council Area.

Care Homes offer you 24 hour personal care if you cannot look after yourself in your own home and, as a result, you are at risk. Some Care Homes offer residential care, including specialist nursing care for people with high levels of need. Care Homes are also registered to care for people with particular needs and a social worker can help you to identify the best home for you, or you can contact the Care Commission for information. If you require assistance to pay for fees charged by a Care Home, you will be required to have a community care assessment which will be carried out by Social Work.
