LAPEER COUNTY SERVICE LEARNING ADVISORY COUNCIL

BYLAWS

Section 1: Name

The name of this organization shall be the Lapeer County Service Learning Advisory Council.

Section 2: Mission

The mission of the Lapeer County Service Learning Advisory Council is to connect community service to academics by providing support and direction to the Lapeer County

K-12 Service Learning Center. In doing so, we will work to:

·  Empower youth

·  Develop effective citizens

·  Create meaningful youth/adult partnerships

·  Make learning relevant and fun

·  Increase student achievement

Section 3: Membership

Membership is open to all, interested in community service and academic service learning, without regard to race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, religion, political beliefs, sexual orientation, marital status or family status. Membership should represent the county geographically and have representatives from students, schools, community agencies and other sectors of the community.

1)  Active members should attend at least 5 meetings a year.

2)  Mailbox members (those who attend meetings less regularly) will receive meeting

notes, reports and other correspondence. This membership category is meant to

promote awareness and communication between the coordinator, active members and

those who do not attend regularly.

Some activities of Service Learning Advisory Council Members may include:

·  Offering ideas for contacts with interested teachers/students and other sectors of the community

·  Providing feedback on needs of teachers for support and training

·  Helping the coordinator understand the organization of the schools and gain access to school committees and faculty

·  Assisting in seeking funds to support service learning

·  Selecting recipients of mini-grants

·  Assessing community needs

·  Recognizing youth for community service and academic service learning

Section 4: Officers

The officers of the Advisory Council shall be the chair and recorder. The Chair shall preside at all meetings. The Recorder shall take meeting notes. The Chair and Recorder will be elected annually, by council members, at the October meeting. Other officers may be elected as needed.

Section 5: Meetings

The Advisory council shall meet once a month September – June and may have special meetings as needed. Meetings shall be the second Tuesday of these months,

8:00 – 9:15 a.m., unless otherwise scheduled. The meeting site shall be determined monthly.

Quorum – For meetings, a quorum exists when at least three members are present.

Section 6: Bylaw Changes

These by-laws can be amended, by a majority vote, after one month’s meeting notice.
