Anti-Anxiety Medications

Darlene Franklin, RN MSN

Lyrics ©

To the tune “Spiderman”

Ativan, Ativan, does whatever a Valium can.

CNS gets depressed

Alcohol can cause arrest

Driving banned.

That’s it for Ativan.

Serax, Atarax, Xanax

Puts anxiety on the nix.

But when taken long term

Withdrawal causes nerves to squirm

That’s the facts—

Serax, Atarax, Xanax.

Antidepressants

Darlene Franklin, RN MSN

Lyrics ©

To the tune: “Zippity Doo Dah”

Chorus

Antidepressants brings smiles—replace sighs

SSRIs and Tricyclics these are two types

If these do not work MAOs may be tried

But take measures so that the patient won’t die.

Celexa, Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft.

No antacids for GI upset.

Or absorption you will forfeit

These are the meds we call SSRIs

Assess response and signs of suicide.

Chorus

Tricylcic meds Ela-vil, Tofranil

Pamelor, Norpramine, Sin-e-quan, Vi-vac-til

Hold MAOs so the BP won’t swell

No Ci-me-ti-dine or Syn-throid as well.

Chorus

MAOs Par-nate, Mar-plan, and Nardil.

Mixed with certain drugs and foods can the patient kill.

Teach and assess before giving the pill.

Less complications will decrease health bills

Never mix with Ci-me-ti-dine

Or with the pain med Me-per-dine

Or death and lawsuit might be seen.

Antidepressants brings smiles replace sighs.

But take measures so that the patient won’t die.

Insulin Therapy

Darlene Franklin, RN MSN

Lyrics ©

To the tune: “The Farmer in the Dell”

Regular Insulin—onset is half an hour

Beware that in two hours it peaks

And then you’ll see its power.

BS may get too low

Like 80 or below

“Cold, clammy, shaky” are complaints

And thinking process slowed.

Its critical to know

Give sugar stat PO

Cause if the BS decreases more

Its to the morgue you’ll go.

Status Epilepticus Song

Lyrics ©

(To tune: Lizzy Borden)

Darlene A. Franklin, RN MSN

Status Epilepticus

A half hour seizure that won’t stop

Or between seizures won’t awake

Give these stat IV drugs, don’t wait.

First choice is Lorazepam

Which has replaced Diazepam

But taken with Cimetidine

Risk Ativan Toxicity

Remember IV Diazepam

Won’t mix with a drug in the land.

Administer Valium slowly.

Check for decreased res’pa’tory (respiratory).

If Ativan won’t work at all

Try IV Phenobarbital

But check drug texts to give safely

For imcompatabilities.

Phenotoin once was next

But’s been replaced by Cerebyx.

Can give three times faster the dose

Watch for CV collapse in host.

Status Epilepticus

A half hour seizure that won’t stop

Or between seizures won’t awake

Give these stat IV drugs, don’t wait.

Tonic Clonic Seizure Medications

Lyrics ©

(To the tune: Santa Claus Is Coming To Town)

Darlene A. Franklin, RN MSN

Chorus:

For seizure control, listen to me

Teach about meds to take faithfully.

Tell those tonic clonics goodbye.

Routine blood levels, important to know

Especially when those little kids grow

Tell those tonic clonics goodbye.

Verse 1

Dilantin and Phenobarb

Valproic Acid too

Tegretol as a second med

If one drug alone won’t do.

Chorus

Therapeutic levels, a necessity

Keep Dilantin between 10 to 20

Tell those tonic clonics goodbye

It’s good to see 15 to 40 (15-40) levels

When using the drug Phenobarbital

Tell those tonic clonics goodbye

Verse 2

Good levels for Tegretol

Will range from 4 to 12 (4-12)

If higher hold, call the MD

And toxic symptoms delve.

Verse 3

Dilantin and Phenobarb

May cause deficiencies.

Suggest more folic acid foods

And increase Vitamin D.

Verse 4

Stevens-Johnson is a bad sign

A measles like rash comes.

Stop Tegretol and Dilantin

To reduce complications.

For seizure control, listen to me

Teach about meds, and give them safely.

Tell those tonic clonics goodbye.

Lice Song

(Sung to the tune: Let’s Go Fly a Kite)

Lyrics ©

Chorus

Let’s get RID of Lice

Pediculosis isn’t nice

Let’s get RID of Lice

and send them soaring

Vacuum couch, carpet, and chairs

Wash bed linens and shampoo the hair

Oh, Let’s get RID of Lice

Verse 1

When nits are on the shafts of your hair

And you itch till you think you might swear.

Shampoo once, shampoo twice

Comb out nits, their dead lice.

This will surely suffice, and get RID of your vice.

Verse 2

When you see them roaming up there

With nits stuck to the shafts of your hair

Schools will be at their wits

till you pick out all nits.

So, boil brushes and combs

RID the lice of your homes.
