NBCU IN CHRYSLER MARKETING DEAL

MOVIE ANGLE AND 2017 PACIFICA LAUNCH

The 2017 Chrysler Pacifica (pictured) is going to showing up a lot on NBCUniversal networks, both the NBC and Telemundo broadcast networks and an assortment of cable channels, including Golf Channel, NBCSN, Sprout and USA Network. It’s part of a wide-reaching partnership that NBCU announced with Chrysler brand, Universal Pictures (a Comcast sister company to NBCU) and Illumination Entertainment—launching both the all-new minivan and Universal’s The Secret Life of Pets which arrives in theatres July 8.

Along with the Pacifica, we’re going to be seeing a lot of NBC Late Night host Seth Meyers and his dog, Frisbee, along with other NBCU talent in pet-related settings. The multi-episode custom content pieces created by NBCU’s Content Innovation Agency, Universal Pictures and Illumination will air across NBCU's networks and social platforms, as well as on BuzzFeed and Vox Media, through July. NBCU invested in both companies last year. The first piece of custom content made its debut on NBC’s Today yesterday, leading to a live ad featuring Meyers on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and another original content piece, as well as the debut of the brand new trailer for the animated movie. Telemundo’s Un Nuevo Dia has activated its digital properties to feature the content.

The campaign continues today with the rollout of three additional branded content pieces featuring Seth Meyers and the all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica, which will air across NBCUniversal’s networks and digital pages. The custom content, as well as the trailer for The Secret Life of Pets, will live on Fandango for the entirety of the campaign.

The Pacifica begins arriving at dealers this month and the Detroit Free Press calls it the most important model launch for FCA this year. Chrysler is credited with inventing the minivan and has invested more than $2.6 billion to develop, engineer and build the new model. But to be successful the newspaper says FCA will have to convince young families to buy a minivan at a time when SUVs and crossovers are all the rage. U.S. sales of minivans have fallen from more than one million annually in 2000 to just over 500,000 today.

Just at the point that automotive sales are beginning to slow down, local dealerships are starting to feel a profit squeeze from labor costs. Automotive News reports that NADA data released at its recent convention in Las Vegas shows the average dealership’s payroll was $3.8 million last year, 8% higher than in 2014. The average store had 67 employees (3 more than the prior year) and the average employee earned $1087 weekly. Salesperson turnover was 72%...... Financial institutions will start reporting first quarter results this week, and Reuters warns the numbers for banks will not be good. Despite one rate increase by the Federal Reserve System in December the net interest margin—the difference between what banks pay to borrow money and what they can get for loans—remains near historically-low levels……An industry that’s doing very well is the convenience store business, where a survey done by the Association for Convenience and Retailing found that 67% of c-store retailers said in-store sales were higher in the first quarter than last year, and 59% added that fuel sales were higher than Q1/2015……Fazoli’s (which has some franchises inside c-stores) finished its fiscal year with same-store sales growth of 4.8% and traffic growth of 3.5%...... Tougher times, however, for Ruby Tuesday, where third fiscal quarter same-store sales were down 3.1% and net loss more than tripled to $3.1 million. Guest counts were down 5.9%……Whole Foods Market’s new “value” concept, 365, will open its first unit late next month in the Los Angeles market, with two more stores expected to open later this year and up to ten more next year……Sam’s Club is reported to be aiming for members with higher household incomes after posting several disappointing quarters as total membership declined. Dropouts mostly came from lower-income HHs……Although extended payment options are prominent in many local furniture retailers’ advertising, Furniture Today reports some retailers shy away from the tactic due to the extra costs it creates. One retailer told the publication it doesn’t offer terms more than 18 months saying, “The main reason is it costs way too much…when you do two years or more you’re up to 15% more on the cost”……While we’ve been reporting on the growth of craft breweries, Mexican beers are also selling strongly in the U.S. market according to Fortune, which reports that two Constellation Brands beers, Corona Extra and Modelo Especial, alone accounted for 25% of the beer industry’s growth last year. Constellation’s CEO adds Corona Extra has been the number one imported beer brand for almost twenty years and has grown to become the number five brand overall in the domestic beer market.

NETWORK NEWS

NBC is having an open casting call for the lead role of Tracy Turnblad in the network’s upcoming holiday special Hairspray Live!, set for Wednesday, December 7. The casting call in Manhattan is set for Sunday, April 24……The Emmy Award-winning sketch comedy seriesMADtvis returning to television, making the jump to primetime with eight all-new one-hour episodes on The CW Network; a premiere date and time for the series, from Telepictures, will be announced at a later date……Reruns of NCIS: New Orleans and Criminal Minds will replace the previously scheduled Hear My Song this Saturday, April 16, at 8:00 pm (ET) on CBS……The opening game of Copa America Centenario will be played in Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, and will air live on Univision, UniMás and UDN Friday, June 3, at 9:00 pm (ET), the first ever three-network simulcast in the history of Spanish language television.

SUNDAY RATINGS

The Masters Tournament spilled into primetime and helped CBS to the Sunday Nielsen win, registering an average 1.3 rating 18-49 and 5.8 in Households, with an average 9.315 million viewers. NBC, with Little Big Shots, was at 1.2 18-49, 4.2 HH and 6.927 million; ABC 1.0 18-49, 2.3 HH and 3.804 million; FOX 0.9 18-49, 1.2 HH and 2.058 million; Univision 0.6 18-49, 1.1 HH and 1.783 million; and Telemundo 0.3 18-49, 0.5 HH and 0.834 million.

SHORT ISN’T ALWAYS BEST FOR MOBILE

What’s the right length for a mobile video ad? It depends on who’s going to be watching it. According to a research report—Multiscreen Video Best Practices—from the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), Milward Brown Digital and Tremor Video, 10-second mobile video ads have greater brand appeal and persuasion potential for Millennial audiences. In comparison, 30-second spots outrank their shorter brethren in those same categories among consumers 35-54.

Overall, audiences agreed that 30-second mobile video advertising has another advantage—it is better for communicating new or complex information. When asked about how much new info was provided by an ad, 73% of those surveyed gave high marks to :30 ads (vs. 68% for :10s). Larger screens can also help a marketer convey a moderately complex message, with 73% of those polled saying ads they viewed on tablets were good at delivering new information—vs. 65% for smartphones.

In addition, the study found that tablet video is particularly engaging among the 35-54 set, with respondents saying that video ads on these devices were more “interesting,” “unique,” and “involving” than those on other platforms.

“The conventional wisdom is that all video ads on mobile screens must be short in order to resonate with audiences,” said Joe Laszlo, Vice President, Industry Initiatives, IAB. “Our research shows that for some demographics and some adverting goals this doesn’t hold up. These findings are critical in creating the next generation of multiscreen video advertising.”

Calkins Media is cashing out of television, according to a report by TVNewsCheck, selling its three ABC affiliates. Raycom Media is said to be buying WWSB Sarasota, FL and WTXL Tallahassee, FL, while Raycom duopoly partner American SpiritMediawill buy WAAY Huntsville, AL. Raycom owns WAFF (NBC) in Huntsville……After 25 years in broadcasting, Cordillera Communications’ Director of Programming and Operations, Dan Stein, will retire from television on May 25, 2016. Stein joined the company in 2012……SAG-AFTRA’s National Board has approved the new TV, audio and digital commercials contract negotiated with the advertising industry earlier this month.
