Dear all,

Urgent appeal to find attackers of woman in mobility scooter

Detectives at Lyndhurst launched an urgent appeal to find the couple who attacked and robbed a frail 71-year-old woman in her mobility scooter at Totton.

At about 4.30pm Tuesday, February 12, the woman was on her way to Tesco Express in Watson Walk, Totton. In the walkway off Ringwood Road, by the bus stop and not far from the shops, she was approached by a young man and woman, both aged between 18 and 20.

The pair stopped in front of the scooter and asked the woman if she knew the way to the college. She turned towards the bus stop and pointed the way, but when she turned back, the man struck her in the face and told her not to tell anyone or he would come after her.

At the same time, police believe the young woman reached into the scooter's front basket and removed a money bag from the victim's shopping bag. The money bag contained £63 in notes and change.

The couple ran off towards the bus stop.

The offending woman is described as 5ft 4ins tall with fair, chin-length, hair. She wore leggings and boots and a blue hooded top, and carried a handbag with a chain strap. The young man is 5ft 8ins tall and of broad build with a ring through his bottom lip. He wore black motorcycle-style boots with a buckle, a grey hooded top with the hood up and gloves with writing on the back of the hand. He spoke with a foreign accent.

Police want to hear from anyone who recognises the descriptions of the offenders or anyone who saw them in Totton late Tuesday afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to contact Lyndhurst CID on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity line on 0800 555 111.

The victim was traumatised by the incident. She immediately returned to her home, but, fearing she might have been followed by the offenders, she did not turn on any lights and drew the curtains. She was even afraid to turn on the television.

After several hours, she rang the police who contacted the ambulance service. The woman, who suffers from heart and lung problems, has substantial bruising to her right cheek and right wrist.

Detective Sergeant Matt Taylor urged the public to contact detectives if they have any information.

"The circumstances of this incident are shocking. A victim, 71, who is in her mobility scooter is attacked and robbed. She was so shaken and shocked by the attack that she did not realise she had been robbed until she returned to her home," Det Sgt Taylor said.

"The area is a fairly busy footpath and is used by local residents to take children to and from school and to attend the recreation centre or shops in Watsons Walk. There could have been a number of college students in the area. If you saw the incident or the offenders, please contact the police," he said.

Police appeal after Barton on Sea theft of jewellery

Police at Lyndhurst are appealing for information after the theft of jewellery from a bungalow at Wavendon Avenue, Barton on Sea.

Between 12.30pm Saturday, February 9, and 11.15am Sunday, February 10, burglars forced open a kitchen door and made an untidy search of the premises. The owner, a recently widowed 61-year-old man, was away at the time.

Items taken include a smoky quartz heart pendant on a gold chain, a small gold-framed picture with a lock of hair in the back, a flower-shaped yellow gold opal brooch, a yellow gold fire opal and diamond ring, a short string of fresh water pearls and a little-worn man's Galaxy watch with a leather strap.

Also taken were seven women's rings, including three gold wedding bands, one with a hashed pattern; a gold solitaire diamond engagement ring and a gold diamond and sapphire eternity ring.

Men's rings included a gold wedding band, a gold tiger's eye ring and a gold signet ring, engraved with the letters GS.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area on Saturday and Sunday. They also would like to hear from a woman who was seen between 8 and 9pm Wednesday to Friday, February 6 - 8 in the Wavendon Avenue area. She was looking at houses and writing in a notebook.

Police Staff Investigator Gerald Larcombe appealed for information from the public.

"This crime was a particularly cruel blow to a man who was bereaved very recently. Many of the stolen items belonged to his late wife and are of particular sentimental value.

"We would encourage anyone with information about the burglary or anyone who is offered jewellery similar to the stolen items to contact police immediately," he said.

Colleagues,

I thought I would take the opportunity to update you on the current staffing position with the team as I have received a few queries lately. Scott, Alan and I remain in post as previously. PCSO Jim Hordle joined us for a three week attachment at the end of October 2012. Shortly after that PC David Ahern went off sick and remains off sick at this time. It is highly unlikely that David will return to the Country Watch team. Jim remains with us on attachment and I have just managed to extend this until the end of August.

On Wednesday evening I attended an event at Lyndhurst Community Centre hosted by the New Forest Land Advisory Service. Over 100 people were in attendance listening to various guest speakers providing advice on equine nutrition and pasture management. A brief input was provided by myself in relation to rural and equine crime. Several people filled out membership forms and have requested site visits from the Country Watch team. The second part of the event will take place in two weeks time and we will be on site for the evening providing tack marking facilities.

Louise.

Sergeant 483 Hubble.

Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service-Community Contact Point (CCP) vehicle

Community vehicle to deliver home safety information...

The Community Contact Point (CCP) Vehicle has been revamped in an effort to improve community safety across the county.

The CCP provides a mobile location to deliver home safety information to communities and was previously only used within Portsmouth, displaying Portsmouth landmark images on its side.

However, its new universal look means not only is it now able to travel across the county benefitting the wider public in receiving vital safety information, but with its fire engine red colour means it is more identifiable as a fire service vehicle, compared to its previous white colour.

The community vehicle is supported by Hampshire Constabulary and is shared with partners to HFRS to help with local difficulties and push community-related initiatives in order to make Hampshire safer.

Partners that have used the CCP include Portsmouth City Council, Safer Portsmouth Partnership, Hampshire Constabulary and Primary Care Trusts across the county.

The vehicle is manned by two crew members from HFRS and comes complete with three computers, DVD facilities, a Smart Screen, a television screen and a kitchen in order to provide refreshments.

To finish some useful information on a new 3 digit number, I will not get into the politics of NHS reforms but this service is live and is replacing the old NHS Direct system. If anything it is an easy number to remember.

NHS 111 service( Replacement for NHS Direct)

NHS 111 is a new service that's being introduced to make it easier for you to access local NHS healthcare services. You cancall 111when you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency. NHS 111 is a fast and easy way to get the right help, whatever the time.

NHS 111 is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Callsare freefrom landlines and mobile phones.

When to use it

You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but it's not a life-threatening situation.

Call 111 if:

  • You need medical help fast but it's not a 999 emergency.
  • You think you need to go toA&E or need another NHS urgent care service.
  • You don't know who to call or you don't have a GP to call.
  • You need health information or reassurance about what to do next.

For less urgent health needs, contact your GP or local pharmacist in the usual way.

For immediate, life-threatening emergencies, continue to call 999.

Kind regards, and stay safe.

Dean Birch
