Using your knowledge, background information and documents,write a five paragraph essay demonstrating thorough understanding by answering one of the below questions.

A) Essay question:Was the First Crusademotivated by religious devotion or by the desire
for political and economic gain?
B) Essay Question:Analyze Pope Urban's motivationsfor the First Crusade.Describethe how impact of his speech would affect Europe and the Middle East.

Objective:This essay is to assess your ability to understand historical context by writing a five paragraph essay that meets the following requirements:

1. Effective opening paragraphthat includes:Background information leading to the essay question.

  • Includes topic sentences for each paragraph that relates to the thesis statement.
  • Effective paragraph development which includes three main points to support your topic sentence
  • Effective use of text based evidence to support your main ideas (Origins of 1st Crusade, Urban's Speech, Class Notes, Fall of Jerusalem document)
  • Effective analysis of your evidence (be sure to elaborate. ) make a statement.... Back it up!!

3. Effective Conclusion Paragraph: Ideas could include any or a combination of the following: Impact on the future, explanation of events to come based on the Crusade
4. Writing style has proper conventions, content specific vocabulary and varied sentence structure, and proper spelling.
5. Writing is well organized and represented in an organizational map (A Must)
