Welcome to the Diskeeper 9.0 support section.

Diskeeper 9.0 has been redesigned since version 8.0 and operates using different communications methods that have been proven to be more reliable than the previous methods. Because of these changes, there are some configuration steps that may be needed prior to running the new Diskeeper 9.0:

1.  Uninstallation—Prior to installing the new version 9.0, it is recommended that you uninstall version 8.0 first. (This does not apply to upgrade versions.) In some cases, it may also be necessary to open the Windows registry and remove previous Diskeeper settings. Follow these steps to completely uninstall Diskeeper 8.0:

  1. Use the Add/Remove Programs applet in Windows Control Panel to uninstall Diskeeper.
  2. After removing Diskeeper version 8.0, navigate to the Program Files folder on your computer. Delete the Diskeeper folder from the Program Files\Executive Software location. (By default, this will be C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper).
  3. Open the Registry Editor by clicking Start | Run and type REGEDIT.
  4. As a safety precaution, back up your registry settings by selecting File | Export. Select the All option in the Export range section and save the file to the folder of your choice. It is recommended that you keep this backup for at least 3 weeks before deleting it. Although it’s unlikely you will need it, this backup copy provides an additional level of safety—something that is always recommended when editing the system registry.
  5. Navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Executive Software location.
  6. Remove any folder titled Diskeeper.

2.  Firewall settings—In some cases, if you are running a hardware or software firewall, you may see messages indicating Diskeeper or one of its related components is trying to act as a server. These messages are expected; you can safely allow these events. You may also be notified that Diskeeper is trying to access the Internet. It is important to note that Diskeeper does not access the Internet (except when you specifically use the Check for Updates feature), but it does use Windows mechanisms that may trigger these alerts from your firewall. Again, these messages are expected and you can safely allow the events.
We recommend disabling any firewall temporarily until the Diskeeper 9.0 installation is completed. After the installation, enable the firewall. Next, go into the settings section in the firewall (this will vary based on the type of firewall being used), and allow Diskeeper in the exception list.

3.  Windows XP Service Pack 2—If you have Windows XP and are using Service Pack 2, you will notice that the built-in Windows firewall will behave as discussed in # 2 above. In this event, make sure that the firewall is allowing Diskeeper communications and the Diskeeper is on the exception list. Please see www.executive.com/Sp2 for more information about using Diskeeper with SP2.
