SCH3U Unit 2

Nomenclature and Types of Reactions Test Review

Nomenclature

You are responsible for knowingall of the nomenclature we have covered so far:

1)Naming IonicPart 1- Binary w Grp 1,2,13 metals

2)Naming Ionic Part 2- Stock System

3)Naming Ionic Part 3- Classical System

*memorize ic and ous for: iron, copper, lead, nickel, and mercury

4)Naming Ionic Part 4- Polyatomics

*memorize hydroxide, ammonium, and Nick the Camel ate a Clam for Supper in Phoenix ions

5)Naming Molecular

*memorize prefixes mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, etc.

6)Recognizing Patterns #1 Oxyanions

hypo___ite , ___ite , ____ate , per___ate

7)Recognizing Patterns #2 Acid Anions

8)Formulas of diatomic elements H2, O2, F2, Br2, I2, N2, Cl2

9)Naming hydrates, peroxides, and thio compounds

Types of Reactions

1)Chemical equations - word, skeleton, balanced

2)Balancing chemical equations

3)Synthesis reactions- know the types, predict the products

4)Decomposition reactions- predict the products

5)Combusting reactions- predict the products of complete and incomplete combustion

6)Single displacement reactions- know the types, know how to use the Metal Activity Series and the Halogen Activity Series to predict the products. Identify whether a reaction has occurred or not.

7)Double displacement reactions- know how to use the Solubility Table to predict the products and the states of the products. Identify whether a reaction has occurred or not.

8)Go over the equations in your Types of Chemical Reactions Lab

Textbook review questions:

1) p. 154 # 12, 25, 31, 32, 34, 35, 41, 50

2) p. 149 # 2-12, 14-16, 18

3) p. 108 # 17, 18, 19, 25

*This unit is short, but it is essential that you have a good grasp of the concepts, because the rest of the course builds on this unit. Most students feel confident going into this test, but are often disappointed with their results if they have not practiced all of the assigned homework.

*Nomenclature is very important!!!! If you have a mistake in your nomenclature, your products will not be correct, and you will not be able to balance the reaction properly. Practice your nomenclature!!!

* You are responsible for all assigned homework. If you have done your homework and this review, you will do well on the test! 

* Help is always available after school. Do NOT hesitate to ask questions!!!
