Demonstrate basic knowledge of the principles of flight for New Zealand Defence Forces aircraft

Purpose This unit standard is intended for people who are members of the New Zealand Cadet Forces. People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate basic knowledge of: the theory of flight; aircraft axis movements; and flight propulsion systems used in NZDF aircraft.

2 Training manuals relevant to this unit standard include NZCF manuals 157 (ATC) and 142 (Aviation Studies). Training manuals are available from the NZCF, New Zealand Defence Force Headquarters, Private Bag, Wellington.

3 Definitions

ATC is the Air Training Corps of NZCF;

NZA is the New Zealand Army;

NZCF is the New Zealand Cadet Forces;

NZDF is the New Zealand Defence Force;

RNZN is the Royal New Zealand Navy;

RNZAF is the Royal New Zealand Air Force.

Elements and performance criteria

Element 1

Demonstrate basic knowledge of the theory of flight.

Performance criteria

1.1 Bernoulli’s theorem of lift is described in accordance with NZCF training manuals.

1.2 Aerofoil related terminology is described in accordance with NZCF training manuals.

Range aerofoil, chord line, angle of attack, camber, relative airflow.

1.3 Flight forces are described in accordance with NZCF training manuals.

Range lift, weight, thrust, drag.

Element 2

Demonstrate basic knowledge of aircraft axis movements.

Performance criteria

2.1 Axes of movement are described in accordance with NZCF training manuals.

Range lateral, longitudinal, normal.

2.2 Aircraft control surfaces are described in accordance with NZCF training manuals.

Range ailerons, elevators, rudder, trim tabs, flaps, spoilers.

Element 3

Demonstrate basic knowledge of flight propulsion systems used in NZDF aircraft.

Performance criteria

3.1 Common flight propulsion systems are described in accordance with NZCF training manuals.

Range reciprocating engines, gas turbine engines.

Please note

Providers must be accredited by NZQA, or an inter-institutional body with delegated authority for quality assurance, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment.

Industry Training Organisations must be accredited by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards.

Accredited providers and Industry Training Organisations assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards.
