ORDER OF WORSHIP

July 5, 2015 – 9:30 A.M.

Prelude: Dot Faasse, accompanist

Welcome

*God’s Greeting/We Greet Each Other

PRAISE THE ALMIGHTY KING

Leader: For as lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

All: Our hope for a new creation is not tied to what humans can do, for we believe that one day every challenge to God’s rule will be crushed. His Kingdom will fully come, and the Lord will rule. Come, Lord Jesus.

*Opening Song of Praise: “Gather Us In”

Leader: Yours, O Lord, is the Kingdom; You are exalted as Head over all! Wealth and honor come from You; You are the ruler of all things.

All: We give You thanks, and praise Your glorious name!

Leader: In Your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.

Now, our God, we give You thanks, and praise Your glorious name!

*“Come, Thou Almighty King” ~ Celebration #8:1,2,4

*“Glorify Thy Name” ~ Celebration #9

FREEDOM IN CHRIST ALONE

Summary of the Law: What is the great and first commandment? Love the Lord your God with all your heart, your soul, and your mind. What is the second commandment like it? Love your neighbor as yourself. What does this mean? LOVE is the fulfilling of the law. To what does this call us? To a life of faith working through love.

Statement of Hope & Trust: We obey God first; we respect the authorities that rule, for they are established by God. We pray for our rulers, and we work to influence governments—resisting them only when Christ and conscience demand. We are thankful for the freedoms enjoyed by citizens of many lands; we grieve with those who live under oppression, and we seek for them the liberty to live without fear.

* Song of Faith: “In Christ Alone”

Lord’s Prayer

“Your Kingdom Come, Your Will be Done”

Most respectable Christians do have the biblical habit of praying for the kingdom to come, but when their lives are good their prayer for the kingdom sometimes fade. People whisper their prayers for the kingdom, so that God can’t quite hear them. “Your kingdom come,” Christian pray, and hope it won’t. “Your kingdom come,” they say but not right away.” When our earthly kingdoms have had a good year, we don’t necessarily long for the kingdom of God to break in. We like our own set up just fine.

+Neal Plantinga Engaging God’s World

Jesus and the Kingdom of God/Heaven

Jesus in his preaching, teaching and actions pronounces “the kingdom is here.”

God’s people hope for God’s kingdom wasn’t a place where they could go when they died. Their hope was that God would be brought near into the present world.

Many wanted a political revolution (a counter kingdom to Rome) i.e. Zealots.

The throne of Jesus is a cross. In many ways, this inaugurates God’s Kingdom.

*What are ways we might think, expect and act the wrong things of God’s Kingdom?

Praying this Today—Implications

We are praying that God would reign in us and through us.

+Reigning in us. The Heidelberg reminds us that God’s Word & Holy Spirit are the means.

Luke 18:17 Jesus speaks of receiving the Kingdom “as a little child”

Our prayer for the kingdom is that we would be good receivers (think of a baby).

+Reigning through us—living in the largeness and yet smallness of God’s kingdom…

People living out a kingdom narrative don’t see life as being compartmentalized into sacred or secular components. For them every activity and relationship to be a person of blessing, to help people know God and enjoy the life he wants for them. The neighborhood book club, the boardroom, the office, the schoolroom, the gym, and the sanctuary in a church building—all are places for God encounters. Kingdom people look for God at work in the world and are open to how they can partner with his work that is already underway in the people they meet and encounters they have.
