Title

/
Creating an Effective Learning Environment
Why / ·  Quality learning environments address diverse learning styles and provide participants the opportunity to grow
·  Production of quality learning environments will save you time and effort
Key Prerequisite Terms and Additional Resources / Key Terms / Additional Resources
·  Principles
·  Trust
·  Buy-in
·  Challenge
·  Learning environment / ·  Read Faculty Guide pp47-50 (paying particular attention to Table 1)
Learning Objectives / ·  Participants will develop an understanding of at least two of the principles in their own context
·  Participants will be able to differentiate between productive and non-productive environments
·  Participants will be able to articulate several concrete actions that facilitators can take to move towards effective learning environments
Performance Criteria / ·  Choose and analyze two principles in personal context
·  Determination of mechanisms of effective learning environments
·  Knowledge of how to reproduce the environment in a different context
Plan / 1.  Opening question on least productive learning environment participants have experienced-open discussion (10 min)
2.  Read, p. 47 attention to Table 1; individually write down specific examples of two of the principles that have worked for you (5 min)
3.  Group share of the examples; Using the critical thinking questions as a guide, discuss as a group the underlying mechanisms for success of the environments (15 min)
4.  Individually, choose at least one different principle and describe its possible implementation in your context (5 min)
5.  SII, one each strength, improvement, and insight - teams rotate one to the left (5 min)
6.  Publicly shared version of principle, its implementation and the SII (5 min)
Critical Thinking Questions / ·  What are common elements of effective learning environments?
·  In your most effective learning environment, what made it so effective?
·  What things as a facilitator can you plan in order to create an effective learning environment?
·  What are the differences between productive and non productive learning environments?
Time / About 45 minutes
