1. "Music of the Heart" is a 1999 film based on a true story about OPUS 118 Harlem School of Music, a school for mostly black and Hispanic children, directed by: WES CRAVEN.
2. The lead role was originally offered to : MADONNA, however due to creative differences, she refused to continue even though she studied the VIOLIN for months in preparation for the film.
3. Meryl Streep plays the role of the heroine, ROBERTA GUASPARI, a mother and violin teacher who is determined to rebuild her life again after a divorce, taking on a job as a substitute violin teacher at a school in the tough NEW YORK area of East Harlem.
4. Roberta runs into an old High School classmate, BRIAN TURNER, a writer who recommends her for a music teaching job and invites her to stay at his place until she gets back on her feet.
5. Roberta is granted the job as violin teacher of the Harlem School of Music after she brought her two sons in to play the violin for the principal, JANET WILLIAMS.
5. Roberta develops feelings for Brian and believes that he would serve as an adequate male role model and father figure for her two sons, however he resists stating that, 'Over half of most marriages end up in DIVORCE'.
6. Roberta's older son, NICK begins having difficulty dealing with the absence of his father and starts to physically lash out at school towards his classmates.
7. The Harlem School of Music teacher, DAN PAXTON is a burned out tenured teacher who discourages Roberta's passion to teach inner city children how to play the violin.
8. Roberta is considered a strict music teacher, however she does show her caring side when she allows a young girl the opportunity to sit down and play during class because she is HANDICAPPED.
