Garland Sams Campout
Texan RV Park Athens, Texas
July 7-9, 2017
By: Wanda Price
The July campout was at the Texan RV Park outside of Athens. As you might expect for July in Texas, it was rather warm; however, the air conditioners were working and we were comfortable. It was pleasant for morning walks and for sitting in the gazebo over the lake watching the fish and turtles. Bob and I arrived around noon on Thursday and there were already five rigs there. Larry Irby was concerned about supper for Thursday night since we hosts had not planned anything. Oma Bean, Tim Duke, Norm Fitzgerald, and Rick King got out their grills and invited us to bring meat over to be grilled. Norm said he was cooking frog legs; however, it looked like chicken to me. The Kings and Fitzgeralds had shady sites on the edge of the lake so people brought chairs over to sit and visit and catch a "cool" breeze.
On Friday morning, Ty Kolb, Rick King and Tim and Carol "Annie Oakley" Duke went to shoot skeet. Paul and Mildred Pittman drove in and stayed for supper. Since the shooters did not bring back any skeet...... Oh, you mean skeet are CLAY pigeons? Oh well, we drove to Athens for fried catfish. You can't beat $6.99 for a meal.
While doing some chores around the motorhome, Larry's back went out and he fell to the ground in pain. He borrowed Bob's walking cane. It did not ease the pain but he was able to get around slowly. He and Patsy left after the meeting Saturday because of the pain and plans to see his doctor on Monday.
Jay and Gloria Delmar drove in Saturday morning for the business meeting. We celebrated July birthdays and anniversaries with cake (provided by Ty) and ice cream. After lunch, some of us went into Athens to visit the Henderson County History Museum located in an historical building on the square. It was not fancy but had a good collection of items donated by various families in the area. It was recently featured on "Daytripper".
We enjoyed an indoor 4th of July picnic Saturday night. The hosts provided fried chicken and everyone brought picnic foods which were served on tables with patriotic decorations and watermelon table covers. The Fitzgeralds' granddaughter helped make the decorations with Carol. She is talented and a really good Joker player! After the meal, we were given an American History test. Ty won with the Dukes coming in a close second. Some suggested that the reason Ty answered so many questions correctly is because he was there with the Founding Fathers!
Scott Lyles brought the devotional Sunday morning and Darla led the singing. The title of the devotion was "Is America a Christian Nation?" Good job, Scott. Very thought-provoking. The Kings left the campout headed to Mt. Rushmore. A C and Jo Ellen Blair returned from a long trip to Arizona and Colorado where they celebrated their 61st anniversary. They helped their great-grandson celebrate his 6th birthday. It seemed strange to have a campout without Wayne and Lou Brush. They went to Indianapolis to attend the FMCA Rally. Sorry you missed your birthday cake, Wayne.
Happy Trails and safe travels! Hope to see you soon!

SHARING A NICE THOUGHT......
Why do I have a variety of friends who are all so different in character? How is it possible that I can get along with them all?
I think that each one helps to bring out a "different" part of me. With one of them I am polite. With another I joke, with another I can be a bit naughty... I can sit down and talk about serious matters with one. With another I laugh a lot. I listen to one friend's problems. Then I listen to another one's advice for me.
My friends are like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. When completed, they form a treasure box. A treasure of friends! They are my friends who understand me better than I understand myself. They're friends who support me through good days and bad. Real Age doctors tell us that friends are good for our health.
Dr. Oz calls them Vitamin F (for Friends) and counts the benefits of friends as essential to our well being. Research shows that people in strong social circles have less risk of depression and terminal strokes.
If you enjoy Vitamin F constantly you can be up to 30 years younger than your real age. The warmth of friendship stops stress and even in your most intense moments, it decreases the chance of a cardiac arrest or stroke by 50%. I'm so happy that I have a stock of Vitamin F!
In summary, we should value our friends and keep in touch with them. We should try to see the funny side of things and laugh together and pray for each other in the tough moments.
Some of my friends are friends on line. I know I am part of theirs because their names appear on my computer screen often and I feel blessed that they care as much for me as I care for them.
Thank you for being one of my Vitamins! The most beautiful thing about friendship is that we can grow separately without growing apart.
Have an awesome day!
