The Wellness Policy sets goals for……

Nutrition Promotion

Age appropriate posters will be posted on the walls where food and beverages are served encouraging the value of good nutrition.

Promotional days in the lunch room with a nutritional alternative menu item featured.

Encourage all food products to meet the nutrition standards of the HHFKA when used as incentive or for club or activity achievement.

Taste testing of new nutritional food, satisfaction surveys, and other activities that promote nutrition awareness.

Healthier food items displayed where students are more likely to choose them.

Encourage parents to pack lunches and snacks that meet the HHFKA nutritional standards.

Nutrition Education

Post nutritional guidelines of the HHFKA in the school building where food/beverages are served.

Lunch menu will include nutritional information, activities, and recipes encouraging the selection of healthy food items.

There will be at least one presentation per school year that promotes good nutrition and nutrition education.

Physical Education & Activity

All students shall receive health/physical education under supervision of a certified teaching staff member.

Appropriate equipment and supplies shall be available during recess time for students to participate in physical activity.

Students will be encouraged by supervising school staff members during recess to participate in some type of physical activity.

The Principal will encourage classroom teachers to incorporate brief physical activity breaks into the school day.

Special events will be coordinated that highlight physical activity, e.g. field day, walk-a-thons, etc. Parent and community members may be involved in planning the events.

Nutrition Guidelines

The BOE requires each school in the district to comply with Federal school meal nutrition standards in accordance with the requirements of HHFKA. This applies to all foods & beverages sold in a district school as part of the school menu, a la carte, school store and snack bar.

Potable water will be made available at no charge to students where breakfast, lunch and afterschool snacks are served during meal service.

On-campus fundraisers involving food must meet the Smart Snack standards of the HHFKA & must be submitted to the Principal for approval.

Birthday celebrations should not include food. Food served during school celebrations should be store bought or purchased through food service (WTPSD BP8505).

Congress recognized, in 2004, that schools play a critical role in promoting student health, preventing childhood obesity, and combating problems associated with poor nutrition and physical activity. Schools participating in the National School Lunch Program needed to create local school wellness policies by 2006.

In 2010 Congress passed the HHFKA adding provisions to the existing policy related to implementation, evaluation and public reporting on the school wellness policy program.

Wedgwood Elementary is taking the initiative to implement the district policy to the fullest. We have formed our School Wellness Committee and invite you to visit the nurse’s webpage to view our wellness initiatives and participate in our journey to reach our goal to become one of the healthiest, safe schools in the district!

WE INVITE YOU TO TAKE THE CHALLENGE AND JOIN US IN MAKING OUR LIVES AND YOUR CHILDREN’S LIVES HEALTHY AND HAPPY!
