Middle School Math Placement Test– May 2017

Proctor Directions

·  This is a secured test.

·  Per the test security agreement: Do not view, print, copy and/or duplicate any part of the test. Proctor directions may be copied. Violations of the test security agreement will result in disciplinary action.

·  This assessment consists of standards for Grades 6 and 7.

·  All students identified gifted, students recommended, and students specifically identified by teacher, parent or student request will be taking the Middle School Math Placement Test.

·  All testing (including make-ups) must be completed within the Illuminate testing window for math, May 11-12 and May 15, 2017.

·  This assessment will be analyzed at the standard level.

·  The Math Placement Test should take approximately 90 minutes and consists of 48 test items.

·  After the assessment, refer to the Teacher Peer Comparison: Comprehensive Report to analyze student results. Directions linked HERE.

Notes to test proctor:

Be sure to read the following at least a day before testing.

1) Please review all directions carefully before you begin discussing the assessment with the students.

2) The assessment aligns to the AZ Math College and Career Ready Standards.

3) The assessment will be administered by trained staff. Scoring will be done automatically in Illuminate.

4) While the questions on the assessment are the same for each student, the answer choices will be randomized.

5) Students must complete the assessment online in Illuminate in a computer lab (per recommendation of Technology.)

6) All students must complete the assessment independently. Calculators may not be used.

7) The test is not timed. However, the test should take about 90 minutes. Students should be able to complete the assessment in one sitting and according to the timeline your school has established. Allow time for giving directions. If a student goes over the time allotted, Illuminate will not shut the student out and the student should continue taking the assessment, completing the same day.

8) If a student has extenuating circumstances (for example, a student is sick and goes home) and needs to complete the test on another day, please fill out the form by clicking on this Resuming/Deleting Student Assessment Request link. Otherwise, the test should be finished within the testing period established by your school.

9) Students must log off the computer after submitting the assessment. Please ask students to bring a book to read or have an independent activity ready for them when they have finished.

10) Proctors are responsible for actively monitoring during the test, but cannot help students with the problems. Accomodations outlined in IEPs and 504s should be followed.

11) If students flag items in the test, they are still able to submit the test without reviewing those items or removing the flag.

12) If all questions are not answered, the system will prompt the student to answer all questions, but will still allow them to submit the assessment without all questions answered.

Distribute student scratch paper and pencils. Students will need to know their username and password for logging on to the system. In addition, teachers will need to provide the online passcode to students.

Step 1: Introducing the Assessment (Teacher Directed)

Read the following information verbatim to students:

Today you will be taking the Middle School Math Placement Test. There are 48 questions on the assessment.

This test will help your upcoming middle school teacher meet your needs as a math student. Talking during the test is not allowed. Electronic devices, such as cell phones and personal music players, are not permitted during the entire testing session.

All your work will be done in the computer lab and completed independently. You will have scratch paper to work out problems. Calculators may not be used.

Step 2: Logging on to the Computer and Illuminate

Say: Now we will begin the Math Placement Test. Log on to the computer using your username and password. Next, click on the Chrome icon. You should see the Kyrene School District Website. Select Students > Educational Resources > Illuminate. Login using your Kyrene username and password. Click on the test name: 2016-2017 Math Grade 5-6 Placement Exam Spring 2017, enter the online password (see below), click Continue. On the next screen, please wait to click on Begin Test until I finish giving the directions.

There are 48 questions on the assessment. Please remember that the purpose of the assessment is so that your middle school math teacher can better meet your needs as a math student. In order to do that, they need to know what you know as well as what you don’t know. Therefore, there may be some questions that you do not recognize and do not know how to answer. For these questions, please make the best guess that you can.

If needed, please use the scratch paper provided to show your work.

You will have until ____ (1 ½ hours from start time) to complete this assessment. Be sure to answer all questions. When you are finished answering all questions, please raise your hand and wait for me to come to your computer. (Teacher should go over and monitor the click of the Finish button, checking that every question has been answered first) Once you have clicked on the Finish button, please log off Illuminate and the computer.
