I would like to invite you to be a contestant in the Miss Spirit of America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant (formerly Miss Point Mallard’s Outstanding Teen Pageant), an official preliminary to Miss Alabama’s and Miss America’s Outstanding Teen. Competition is Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the historic Princess Theatre Center for the Performing Arts, 112 Second Ave. N.E., Decatur.

Participation is limited to the first 20 contestants who submit completed paperwork and the $100 entry fee by Monday, June 16, 2014. The entry fee supports the Miss Spirit of America Pageant scholarship fund.

Orientation begins at 8:15 a.m. at the Princess. Because we will be on an extremely tight schedule, it is imperative that you arrive on time and dressed in shorts, T-shirt and tennis shoes ready to rehearse. Production rehearsal starts at 8:30 followed by individual talent rehearsals. You should bring your entire competition wardrobe, including makeup and hair styling needs, to orientation. Volunteers will be available to assist you. Interviews also will be at the Princess and lunch will be provided by a pageant sponsor. Teen competition begins at 2 p.m.

The prize package for Miss Spirit of America’s Outstanding Teen 2014 includes an official Miss America’s Outstanding Teen local preliminary pageant crown and sash, congratulatory bouquet and state competition entry fee paid.

“Christmas in June” is our theme and will feature Emma Caroline Gaddy, Miss Point Mallard’s Outstanding Teen 2013 and fourth runner-up to Miss Alabama’s Outstanding Teen. PAGEANT PARTICULARS

For opening number, contestant introductions and onstage question, you will wear an age-appropriate cocktail dress of any color.

PHASES OF COMPETITION

8-minute private INTERVIEW: This is your opportunity to show the judges who you are. Do not be anxious. It is simply a conversation with five people who want to get to know you. Overall first impression, poise, composure, confidence, expression, speaking ability, knowledge and personality are evaluated. You will be asked questions from your contestant resume sheet as well as questions about current events, teen-related issues and general knowledge. Be prepared! If you do not know the answer to a question, simply say “I am not familiar with that subject, issue,” etc. Don’t try to answer a question you know nothing about. Judges will not deduct points if you are unfamiliar with the subject of the question.

When preparing your contestant resume (interview sheet), please make sure it is neat and on one page. It will be seen by the judges exactly as it is submitted to the Miss Spirit of America’s Outstanding Teen Pageant.

FITNESS COMPETITION: On pageant day, the pageant choreographer will teach you a simple aerobics routine. You will perform it in groups of three and then individually. Stamina, agility, composure, confidence, tone and personality are among things judges consider.

TALENT COMPETITION: Your talent selection must be no more than 90 seconds long. (If you have competed at the local/state level in the past, please note: The 90-second time limit is now a Miss America’s Outstanding Teen rule --- not an option). Send a CD recording of your music with your paperwork and bring a copy with you as a backup. Please be sure the recording is of good quality. If you are an instrumentalist, you do not need to send a copy of your music. Technical ability, entertainment value, confidence and stage presence are among things judges evaluate.

ON-STAGE QUESTION: This competition will follow opening number and you will wear your opening number outfit. Your question will be formulated from information on your contestant resume. You will be judged on content of answer, poise, confidence and personality. Your outfit will not be judged or factored into your score.

EVENING GOWN: This is the glamorous portion of the pageant and will be the last phase of competition. Judges consider poise, confidence, composure, sense of style and attractiveness. They also evaluate whether the contestant is wearing the gown or if the gown is wearing her. It is the contestant --- not the gown --- that is judged.
