Welcome to 4-H!
As a volunteer, working with the OSU Extension 4-H staff, we are very glad that your family is interested in being a part of 4-H. It is,the largest youth development organization in the United States! In 4-H, youth learn to:
Ø be part of a group that includes their family and others in the community.
Ø set goals for themselves.
Ø master skills that ‘spark’ their interest.
Ø make decisions, be leaders, and practice independence in a safe environment, and
Ø be generous through teamwork and community service.
Experiential learning, or learning-by-doing, is the way 4-H staff and volunteers guide young people to explore, ask questions and apply learning. Youth learn in groups of peers at 4-H meetings, at events, at camps, or independently between 4-H meetings.
Projects are topics that 4-H members choose to focus learning. A few examples of 4-H projects include: leadership, photography, robotics, dog training, science, food preparation, archery, and tractor safety.
Youth-adult relationships in your family and in the community, are key to positive youth development. As a result, youth who participate in 4-H are also more likely to have high academic motivation and success, high personal standards and take personal responsibility! They are also more likely to make healthful choices, be connected with others, and contribute to the larger community!
Caring adults and older teens support 4-H participant learning. These individuals have become “approved”
4-H volunteers after a rigorous background check with references, signed agreements, and orientation to 4-H.
Your child will benefit from your ongoing interest and support too. Ways you can help include:
Ø Assisting the 4-Her select projects that she might enjoy, within his abilities, and fit into your family’s space and financial means.
Ø Providing or arranging for transportation to meetings and activities.
Ø Being present whenever possible. Staying informed about 4-H events and deadlines.
Ø Encouraging the child’s work. Making positive suggestions - without taking over!
Welcome to 4-H! We are glad that your family is joining the 4-H Youth Development Program. It is an opportunity to grow in new ways and have fun together. Your family will make new friends in the community, county, state and nation! Contact me if you have questions. Welcome to 4-H!
Sincerely,
4-H Volunteer
