FIRE INSPECTION POLICY

POLICY

The City of Fort St. John Fire Department will inspect occupancies to ensure that existing fire protection measures provided are acceptable and measures are taken to provide an acceptable degree of safety. When a deficiency is located, the owner or occupant will be given a time line to comply. A follow-up procedure will complete the inspection process.

To ensure the Fire Department meets the needs of fire inspection requirements the listed procedures will be implemented:

  1. The inspection frequency will be reviewed for all occupancies. Using the inspection reports and fire reports determine if the current frequency is sufficient. A2-High fire risk should be limited to Licensed

  1. Beverage establishments and restaurants. A2-Medium and Low can be used for occupancies that practice

an approved fire safety plan.

  1. A system for scheduling the fire inspections and follow-up inspections will be implemented. A master diary will be used similar to the one by the RCMP and issued for use by each shift.
  1. The reporting format for inspections must include an assigned due date for code violations. The follow-up inspection is set by this date and is entered into the diary. The name of the owner or occupant that is in attendance at the time of the inspection will also be included on the report.
  1. An audit will be done annually to ensure that all required inspections are performed.
  1. Time lines for new occupancy inspections will be set at the same time as the Building Inspector. Before an occupancy permit is issued, all Building Code and Fire Code issues will be addressed
  1. Updated training will be provided for all staff that are required to do inspections. Training will be coordinated and provided by Prince George Fire Commissioner’s Office.
