We have received your Registration Form for Calphad XXX, to be held at the York Viking Moat House Hotel, York, England, 27th May-1st June 2001. Please verify the information above. If a change is required please let us know via fax or email. TRAVELLING TO YORK
York is within easy travelling distance of three international airports Manchester, Leeds/Bradford and Humberside.
From Manchester International Airport,(see www.manchesterairport.co.uk) there is a frequent a direct, 24 hour train service, called the “Transpennine Express”, from Manchester Airport Railway Station to York. (for train times to York see www.railtrack.co.uk ). At the airport, walkways will take you to the station from each terminal. Luggage trolleys are free in the UK – just help yourself to one. If possible, select the hourly direct train (i.e. no changes) service. At present, tickets cost £22.40. Train journey time to York is 1.75 hrs. On arrival in York a hotel minibus will operate a shuttle service between York Station and the York Viking Moat House Hotel on Sunday 27th May. Look out for the Guide with the Calphad XXX sign near the station exit for assistance with the shuttle service.

From Leeds-Bradford International Airport go by coach, “the LBA Airlink” (for timetable see www.lbia.co.uk) to Leeds Railway Station, fare: £1.50 single, and then by train to York (see www.railtrack.co.uk)
TRAVELLING TO YORK FROM LONDON HEATHROW OR LONDON GATWICK AIRPORT
If your flight to the UK is due to arrive in London then we would recommend that you try to arrange an onward flight preferably to Manchester Airport (or Leeds/Bradford). Then follow the above instructions.
Alternatively, you can take the London Underground train, known as “the tube”, (see www.thetube.com) from Heathrow (see www.heathrow.co.uk ) across Central London (on the Piccadilly Line) to Kings Cross St Pancras Station. Then take the train to York from Kings Cross Railway Station, (see www.york-tourism.co.uk (Getting to York) and www.railtrack.co.uk ) for train times. The standard London/York open return fare is £118.62 with no restriction on train times. The ‘saver’ is £61 with restrictions on early morning travel from London. The ‘supersaver’ fare is £58.50. This ticket is not valid for travel before 10.30 am Mon-Fri from Kings Cross and not valid between 15.31 and 18.59hrs or on Fridays. When buying your return train ticket please make sure you make it clear when you wish to return in order to get the best deal on your ticket.
For arrivals at London Gatwick airport (see www.gatwick.co.uk), there is a frequent train service to London Victoria Station. Then take the “tube” to Kings Cross (see www.thetube.com) and train to York (see www.railtrack.co.uk above). Please avoid travelling in the London business “rush hours” if you possibly can.
MONDAY, 28th MAY. Please note this is a Bank (i.e.public) Holiday in the UK. Public transport will be affected.
THE YORK MOAT HOUSE HOTEL. You can obtain information about the hotel by visiting the website at www.yorkmoathouse.co.uk.
HOTEL ROOMS. If you completed and returned the Hotel Booking Form then a room (i.e. bed and breakfast) has been reserved for you at the York Viking Moat House Hotel according to your instructions. If you have not reserved a room and need one please email Fred Hayes as soon as you can. The pre-reserved block of 90 rooms has already been allocated. On arrival please check in at the hotel reception desk situated near the main entrance on the ground floor. Participants must settle their own bills before departure.
ACCOMMODATION. Unless you have specified otherwise you have been allocated a “non-smoking room”. If you require a “smoking room” please let us know.
DIETARY REQUIREMENTS. If you have any special dietary requirements (incl vegetarian etc) please inform Fred Hayes or Andy Watson as soon as you can.
MEALS Breakfast will be available for hotel residents in the Waterfront Restaurant from 07.00 – 09.00hrs. For Calphad participants mid-morning refreshments (Tea, Coffee & Danish Pastries) will be served between 10.30-11.00 hrs. A buffet lunch will be served daily from 12.30-14.00 hrs, Monday–Friday (Wed 12.00hrs) in the Waterfront Restaurant. Tea, Coffee & Biscuits will be available from 15.30-14.00hrs. For Calphad participants and accompanying persons, dinner on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday will be served at 19.30hrs (to 22.00hrs) in the Henley Suite.
HOTEL BODY CLUB. Hotel residents have free access to the Hotel Body Club between 06.00hrs and 21.00hrs. Facilities include a gymnasium with weights, a sauna and a steam room. Sunbeds can be hired and a beautician/masseur service is available.

CALPHAD XXX REGISTRATION. Registration for Calphad XXX will begin at 16.00hrs on Sunday, 27th May, at the registration desk situated on the first floor at the entrance to the Henley Suite
WELCOMING RECEPTION. The Welcoming Reception/Buffet on Sunday, 27th May will be available from 19.30hrs onwards in the Henley Suite. (The main conference room)
CALPHAD XXX PROGRAMME. The “Provisional Programme of Oral Presentations” and the List of Poster Presentations can be found on the Calphad website (www.calphad.org). The Conference will begin at 08.30 hrs on Monday 27th May in the Henley Suite with a Tribute to the Life and Work of Himo Ansara, who sadly passed away at the end of March 2001, to be given by Claude Bernard.
ORAL PRESENTATIONS. Projection facilities will be provided for Overhead Transparencies (Viewgraphs), for slides and for Powerpoint Presentations.
POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS. A video projector and laptop will be available for presentations. The laptop will be running Windows 95, MS Office 2000 Professional with PowerPoint 2000 (SR-1). We strongly recommend the use of PowerPoint presentations. To ensure compatibility, all presentation files should be emailed to (or to ) to arrive by Monday 21st May at the latest. Authors will be responsible for checking, before their session starts, that their presentations will function correctly on the conference projection system. Authors should also bring their presentations on OHP transparencies in the event of a problem with their PowerPoint files.
POSTER PRESENTATIONS. As can be seen from the “Provisional Programme” on the Calphad website (www.calphad.org), two poster sessions will be held during Calphad XXX. The first will be from 16.10hrs to 17.25hrs on Tuesday 29th May and the second from 16.10hrs to 17.25hrs on Thursday 31st May. Both sessions will be held in the Regatta Suite adjacent to the Henley Suite, the main Conference Room. Each poster board is 1 metre high and 2 metres long and will carry two posters. Please print your poster to a maximum size of 1m x 1m, e.g. A0 portrait. Fixing materials will be available in the poster room
SPECIAL EVENTS. The Conference Excursion to Castle Howard (see www.castlehoward.co.uk) will be on Wednesday 30th May. Coaches will collect the group (attendees + accompanying persons) and transfer to Castle Howard. En route, Guides (one per coach) will explain about the history of the Howard Family, their House and its treasures. Castle Howard’s own knowledgeable Guides will show the group around the House. We will return to the Hotel for 17.30hrs. The Calphad XXX banquet will be held at St. Williams College (see www.yorkminster.org ) commencing 19.45 hrs for 20.30hrs. Coaches will start to shuttle the group from the hotel to St.Williams College at 19.15hrs.The group will be shuttled back to the Hotel at 23.00 –23.30hrs.
If there is sufficient interest, a one hour guided tour of York Minster will be arranged to start at 18.00 hrs on Tuesday, 29th May. Please indicate by return whether or not you wish to be included.
ACCOMPANYING PERSONS’ PROGRAMME. Full details will be given on arrival. Short Summary: Mon: 09.30-noon, Guided Walking Tour of York. Tues: Full day coach tour starting 09.30hrs Ripon, Fountains Abbey, Lunch at Studley Royal. Wed: Castle Howard/ Banquet at St.Williams College. Thurs: Full day coach tour starting 09.30hrs, Pickering, North Yorkshire Moors, Whitby.
COMMUNICATIONS. During Calphad XXX, messages can be left at the registration/information desk by phoning +44 (0)1904 459988. Upon receipt messages will be posted on the message board near the entrance to the Henley suite. Access to the internet can be obtained on request at the hotel Reception Desk. There is a charge for this service.
CAR PARKING. There are a few car parking spaces available at the hotel at a cost of £6.00 per day. Please enquire if interested.
