CONTENT VOCABULARY

  1. Peninsula- a piece of land nearly surrounded by water
  2. Bard- someone who writes or performs epic poems or stories about heroes and their deeds
  3. Colony- a group of people living in a new territory who have ties to their homeland; the new territory itself
  4. Polis- a Greek city-state
  5. Agora- a gathering place; marketplace in ancient Greece
  6. Phalanx- a group of armed foot soldiers in ancient Greece arranged close together in rows
  7. Democracy- a government by the people
  8. Helots- enslaved people in ancient Sparta
  9. Ephor- a high ranked government official in Sparta who was elected by the council of elders
  10. Satrapy- the territory governed by an official known as a satrap
  11. Satrap- the governor of a province in ancient Persia
  12. Zoroastrianism- a Persian religion based on the belief of one god
  13. Direct Democracy- a form of democracy in which all citizens can participate firsthand in the decision making process
  14. Representative Democracy- a form of democracy in which citizens elect officials to govern on their behalf
  15. Philosopher- a person who searches for wisdom or enlightenment
  16. Myth- a traditional story that explains the practices or beliefs of a people, or something in the natural world
  17. Ritual- words or actions that are part of a religious ceremony
  18. Oracle- a sacred shrine where a priest or priestess spoke for a god or goddess
  19. Fable- a story meant to teach a lesson
  20. Oral tradition- the custom of passing along stories by speech
  21. Drama- a story written in the form of a play
  22. Tragedy- a play or film in which characters fail to overcome serious problems
  23. Comedy- a play or film that tells a humorous story
