BAYHAWKS BASEBALL CLUB

Dear Sponsor:

The BayHawks Baseball Club is a member of the Charles - St. Mary’s (CHASM) Men’s Baseball league. This league officially began in 1947 and has continued to operate without interruption making it one of the oldest leagues in the Washington metropolitan area. For over 60 years, the Charles-St. Mary’s league has provided an opportunity for adults representing every facet of our community, from doctors and lawyers to farmers and politicians, the chance to revisit dreams of the past, and play the great game, commonly referred to as “America’s Pastime”. The league is comprised with young college and high school players continuing to rise with the hopes of someday making it to the Major’s and those who never quite made it, but aren’t willing to retire the old glove quite yet and enjoy the competition provided by the younger players trying to achieve a dream. Many of the players have played at the college level, some have played professionally in the minor leagues, and a few have even played in the Majors.

In 1986, Dr. William Close published a book about the league. The book was titled A Sandlot Saga, and captured the essence of the league from its beginning through the 1985 season. This is how Dr. Close describes the CHASM league: “The sandlot game of the Charles-St. Mary’s League with its dedication to parochial interests has been a source of entertainment in the bi-county area…The league has fostered lifelong friendships, provided connections for business opportunities, and encouraged community spirit. The game has become part of everyone’s life who as participated in the league as a fan, officer, or player. But the most important contribution of the sandlot game is its greater emphasis on the play-for-fun idea rather than upon winning at all costs. The pressures placed on all members of our society are indeed numerous and need not be increased by the pressures of play. The sandlot game of the Charles-St. Mary’s League makes its great contribution to society and to the betterment of the bi-county area by emphasizing the wholesome aspects of the game of baseball.”

In 1947 the league started with 8 teams and grew to as many as 14, in 1950. In 2012 there were 5 teams. Last season, 2013, marked the introduction of two new expansion teams, the Storm and the BayHawks, both coming out of the LaPlata area. This year, the BayHawks have officially moved to Leonardtown and have established Leonardtown High School as their home field.

The BayHawks Baseball Club is looking for sponsors so that we can continue to provide a place for members of Leonardtown and the surrounding community to play baseball and to re-live fond memories of days gone by and to provide a unique opportunity for our younger players to continue to grow and develop in their pursuit of their own dreams.

We truly hope that you will become a sponsor of the BayHawks Baseball Club through your generous contribution. We would also encourage you to come out and cheer for your Leonardtown BayHawks as we represent the community on the field.

Donation Sheet

Although we are seeking “donations” there are a few things that we can do to demonstrate our appreciation for your support: we can put your logo and a link to your website on the BayHawks Baseball Club homepage; we can place a banner representing your organization at our home field (Leonardtown High School); we can place a banner representing your organization at the CHASM primary field in La Plata (Rainbow Construction Field); and if you are a bar or restaurant, we can hold a team function or event at your establishment. We are also willing to entertain any other ideas that your organization may come up with that will allow us to show our appreciation for your donation.

Additionally, as a newly established organization, we have not received official “non-profit” status; however, the CHASM league is officially a non-profit organization. If you would like to receive a tax break for your donation, you can make your donation to the CHASM league on behalf of the BayHawks. This way you will receive the tax credit and your local Leonardtown BayHawks team will still receive the donation.

To make your donation easier, we are including a couple of sponsor options; however, feel free to donate however much you want (more or less) and provide some recommendations as to what you would like in return.
