Purpose: Students will promote and encourage travel to anothernation through the presentation and research of information related to the culture and geography, attractions and activities, and food and cuisine of a selected country. Students will further expose their peers to the country through the preparation of a related food dish to the class.

Objectives:

  • Research a country for information related to geography, culture, and cuisine.
  • Synthesize information into a pamphlet or PowerPoint to be shared with the class
  • Prepare a dish that is representative of the country researched

Students will select a country that we have not covered in class and develop and travel brochure using Microsoft Publisher or a PowerPoint presentation that will be presented to the class. Students must highlight and share all of the following information:

Basic Information and Background of Country (15 points)

  1. Climate and Geography
  2. Culture, Language, and Religion

Travel and Visiting (20 points)

  1. 3 Activities to do while visiting the country
  2. 3 Attractions to visit or see

Food and Cuisine (25 points)

  1. Common crops, foods, spices, and herbs grown and consumed
  2. Cooking techniques, tools, utensils, and methods used in food preparation
  3. Dining and Eating Customs
  4. 3 Popular dishes or meals with descriptions

Prepared Food Item (20 points)

Students must prepare a traditional dish or meal that is representative of the country researched.

The prepared food item must meet the following criteria:

  • Made/Prepared at home by self or with help of friends/family
  • Relevant to the country of origin
  • Have a recipe attached with the ingredients list and preparation steps

Information and food must be presented on assigned date, 10 point deduction each late day.

Countries can only be researched by one student, and may not be repeated. Students may select a country not listed below, however must receive permission from the teacher prior.

Remember you are trying to sell and promote travel to this country, so the more creative and descriptive you are, the better the outcome of the assignment.

Basic Information and Background of Country / 15 points

Accurately describe the country’s climate and geography. Provide a sufficient description and overview of the culture, language(s) spoken, and religion and religious ceremonies and holidays.

Travel and Visiting/ 20 points

Promote three activities available to someone who is visiting the country. Identify and describe three attractions or landmarks in the country provided with accurate description and locations.

Food and Cuisine (25 points)

Identify crops, grains, spices, and herbs grown and eaten in that nation. Effectively describe and discuss cooking techniques, tools and utensils used to prepare foods. Specify dining customs and ceremonies that occur based on culture or religion; this may include a meal plan. Research and describe three popular dishes or meals characteristic or popularly consumed in that country.

Images/ 5 points

Include multiples images to describe the various destinations, geography, meals and other relevant information to the country. Images help to enhance a presentation, especially if you are trying to promote travel, so be sure to include at least 5.

Resources/ 5 points

Resources must be identified on the last slide of PowerPoint or the back of brochure. Source used to for recipe must be on it. Failure to do so is plagiarism, and consequences will result.

Presentation to class/ 10 points

Effectively and professionally present and promote travel to this country on assigned date with all materials prepared. Student must be knowledgeable of country and not rely heavily on notes.

Prepared Food Item/ 20 points

Food item must be relevant to country, prepared at home, and include a copy of the recipe. True effort towards accuracy must be made. There should be enough of the item to share with class.
