Dorotheum Auction of Race-, Sports-, and Touring Cars at the Ennstal Classic in Gröbming on 26th July 2008

The tarmac is bound to get hot when the Ennstal-Classic Rally, one of the most famous events of its kind, presents a selection of the finest and most beautiful vintage race- and sports cars from 24th to 26th of July 2008 – and not just because it takes place in the middle of summer.

As the Dorotheum itself has a highly successful vintage car category, it will host an auction of vintage race-, sports-, and touring cars during the course of the Ennstal-Classic, on 26th July 2008 at Gröbming (Styria/Austria). As a special added attraction the buyer of one of the cars on auction, the 1935 Wolseley Hornet Special 14, he or she will be automatically entitled to participate in the Ennstal-Classic of 2009! This open sports car with seats upholstered in blue leather has been valued at 78.000 to 88.000 Euro.

Other sports cars presented at this auction include an 1954 Austin-Healey 100 M (€ 48.000-62.000), and a racy, feline Jaguar E-Type V 12 of 1974. The cabriolet comes in what is generally considered the best colour for sports cars, „British racing green“ (€ 90.000- 110.000, pictured on the left).

The selection of race cars features a 1971 red Dino Gipsy P271 (pictured on the right € 100.000 – 130.000), and the Chevrolet Camaro SS 350, of 1967, Chevrolet's response to the popular Ford Mustang (€ 42.000 – 48.000).

Nothing exudes the atmosphere of the races as much as a vintage Formula race car. This blue and yellow PRS built in 1980 (Pro-Race Services, England, € 12.000 – 15.000), was used in the „Formula Ford“, founded in 1967 to promote young talent and only discontinued in the year 2000, which produced such Formula One aces as Schuhmacher, Senna, Hakkinen or Fittibaldi. Once contending in the same class, a dashing white Van Diemen RF 86 (1986, € 12.000 – 15.000) is the type of car in which Michael Schuhmacher began his meteoric career.

Among the auction's more trendy cult cars is a metallic-silver Porsche 356 B 2000 GS Carrera 2 (Coupé 1963, € 150.000 – 180.000) with only 5000 km on its 'milometer'.

Of particular fascination to Ernst Pilger, Dorotheum vintage car expert, is a Mercedes-Benz Cabriolet 220 SE, built in 1960. This cosmopolitan touring car comes regularly fitted out in heavy woods and leathers, and equipped with the elite version of the „Becker Mexico“ radio. With its two-toned lacquer coat it will still "cause quite a few heads to turn" (€ 88.000 – 102.000).

The prominent participants in the Ennstal Classic include the sons of two Grandprix legends, Bernd Rosemeyer and Hans Joachim Stuck and the Dorotheum, too, will enter a rally team in the event. It will take part in a red 1963 Corvette, in the rare Split-Window sport sedan version.
