NMA's appeal

On behalf of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, I would like to inform you of the catastrophic earthquake that hit Nepal on April 25, 2015 and its aftermath.

With a magnitude of 7.9, at an epicenter roughly 60 miles northwest of Kathmandu (a place called Barpark, Gorkha), Nepal faced a devastating earthquake at 11:56 am last Saturday morning that has caused colossal damage to settlements, basic infrastructure and religious heritage sites in the central region of the country. As a consequence of the fatal earthquake and aftershocks, the death toll has crossed 7,000 and is expected to rise as rescue teams get access to areas that have been blocked due to landslides.

Langtang and Mt. Everest have also been significantly affected where 95% of the settlement has been destroyed by this earthquake. Massive avalanche followed in various parts of the country, including in Mt. Everest, which caused 19 deaths and additional loss of settlements. The entire Langtang village, north of Kathmandu, has been submerged due to avalanche from the southern slopes of Langtang Lirung and Langtang II. Over 300 people have been estimated to have been killed in this area.

Rescue and relief operations are being carried out in full force with the government, along with NGOs and international rescue squads, tirelessly working to provide shelter and food to the 15 districts that have been hit the hardest. In a coordinated effort, stakeholders pooled their resources to successfully rescued a total of71people from Everest Base Camp (5350m) to Kathmanduon 26 April and evacuated 60 climbers fromCamp I (6100m)and 120 climbers from Camp II (6500m)to Mt. Everest Base Camp on 27 April. The landslide at Langtang has impeded rescue efforts due to which statistics of that area are still not available.

From hindsight, massive outbreak of cholera and other epidemics have been predicted due to lack of hygiene, sanitation and clean water. Cholera outbreak in a number of villages in Gorkha and surrounding villages of Kathmandu has already been recorded. With an eye to surpassing such an epidemic, 90% of the country's forces have been mobilized, including support from the international community, to provide safe drinking water and proper sanitation.

With a very heavy heart and renewed conviction that Nepal will bounce back to strengthen its foundations and continue its efforts for rehabilitation of damaged areas, I would like to request you to support in our endeavor to rebuild the country. I will appreciate any amount of support from your end and your networks.
