5 STEP APPLICATION PROCESS

Students interested in beginning the internship application process should initiate contact with the Office of Career Planning the semester prior to the desired internship. For those students seeking opportunities away from the local area, initial contact should be made at least two semesters prior to the desired experience. The process for implementing an internship involves the following steps…

1.  Application

a.  _____ If you are going to begin searching for an internship, complete Intern Application Form and obtain signatures of academic advisor and department chair. Once returned to the Office of Career Planning, signature of the student affairs office will be obtained.

OR

If you have already secured an internship site and opportunity, you will need to complete the Intern Application Form and obtain signatures of academic advisor and department chair. Once returned to the Office of Career Planning, signature of the student affairs office will be obtained. You will also need to provide a completed Intern Request form completed by the site and a job description for the internship. Once these documents are obtained and approved, your internship will be registered.

b.  _____ Create/Complete Resume. (Cover Letter may be necessary, depending on the opportunity)

c.  _____ Upload resume to College Central Network. Check emails for approval of resume status. If not approved, update and resubmit.

2.  Search

a.  _____ Decide on type of internship interested in seeking.

b.  _____ Identify location/ area of interest.

c.  _____ Identify potential sites.

d.  _____ Search College Central Network.

e.  _____ Review Calendar for On Campus Recruitment Program and Resume Referrals.

f.  _____ Begin applying to internships of interest.

3.  Interview

a.  _____ Prepare for the interview process by attending Interview Skills Workshops, reviewing handouts, and practicing. If you are contacted to interview- you will maintain professional communication with the employer. If you choose not to accept an interview, you will provide notice to the employer.

b.  _____ Remember: You are representing King’s College throughout this process. Any negative behavior can affect the relationship. Don’t forget to send a thank you note to the employer/ site.

4.  Acceptance

a.  _____ Notify Office of Career Planning of the intention to accept a particular internship opportunity.

5.  Registration

a.  _____ Return to the Office of Career Planning to complete the necessary registration forms. All internships must be registered at the Office of Career Planning.

b.  _____ Office of Career Planning will attain final approval from faculty coordinator.
