Explanatory notes

1 Definitions

Vagahau Niue refers to the language of Niue. This unit standard involves listening to spoken Vagahau Niue, and responding in English;

Contexts refers to communicative situations, topics and settings appropriate to Vagahau Niue;

Predictable refers to topics and settings that are within the learner’s likely personal experience;

Basic refers to simple sentences, simple compound sentences and limited vocabulary;

Texts refer to coherent and identifiable pieces of spoken or written communication; for example spoken texts include messages, instructions, announcements, and dialogues that deal with everyday situations;

Main points refer to the objective, intention or the most important ideas in spoken texts;

Specific details refer to the smaller parts that support and expand on the main points.

2 Sources of texts may include but are not limited to – conversations, answer phone messages, digital recordings.

If the recordings are not for public purposes, learners should seek the consent of featured parties, speakers or leveki/caretakers of the taoga.

3 This unit standard requires two spoken texts in Vagahau Niue. Each text may be one or more spoken extracts or passages, must be at least 150 words long, and may be heard up to three times.

4 Outcomes one and two are to be assessed twice (once for each text). These assessments may be on two separate occasions.

5 Questions and responses for this unit standard, written or spoken, are to be in English or Vagahau Niue.

6 Endorsement of village language variation may be conducted by pulotu, village or community appointed experts.

Identify the main points from spoken texts in basic Vagahau Niue in predictable contexts.

Evidence requirements

1.1 The main points identified are consistent with those in the spoken texts.

Range evidence must be presented for a minimum of three main points per text.

Identify the specific details from spoken texts in basic Vagahau Niue in predictable contexts.

Evidence requirements

2.1 The specific details identified are consistent with those in the spoken texts.

Range evidence must be presented for a minimum of six specific details per text.
