Teaching Notes
- Top Secret is a three-level course for young learners in Senior classes A-C. By incorporating exciting mystery elements and codebreaking activities, Top Secret makes English learning fun and stimulating.
- Each unit consists of a mission, during which students find clues and use their special codebreaker to crack a code and find a password that allows them access to more fun activities in the Top Secret digital e-Book.
- In Top Secret 1, the main characters are Agents Ben, Lily, Emma and Matt. Students can also follow the adventures of cartoon characters Danny, AJ, Bonzo and Nipper in the ongoing adventure story, Mystery Island.
- In Top Secret, your students will also discover interesting true facts about English-speaking countries.
- Each Student’s Book has ten separate units or ‘Missions’, which as well as covering grammar, vocabulary and skills, also present the students with a codebreaking challenge every time. Clues are given throughout the unit, so students can crack the code by the time they reach the end of each Mission.
- Other special features include Discover Words, Discover Grammar and Discover Functionssections, all with clear presentations/explanations. Grammar and vocabulary is recycled regularly throughout the book. The Talking Tips sections include everyday expressions which will prove useful for students. The Writing Zones sections cover different writing tasks, and the Writing File at the back of the Students’ Book gives clear models as well as tips.
- Pronunciation is addressed in a comprehensive and relevant way – with particular attention to the difficulties Greek learners have with the English language.
- Songs, raps, projects and tips are all included regularly throughout the book.
Organisation of the syllabus
- Students’ book: The book is divided into ten topic-based units or ‘Missions’. The Mission and the codebreaking task are introduced by one of the Agents each time, and they give students the first clue for the codebreaking task. Then Lesson a, b and c incorporate vocabulary, grammar and skills. Every second Mission has a Lesson d, which provides extra skills practice. Every Mission ends with a Mission Complete page, with a puzzle, a tip or a rap, and the Top Secret Agent Test, where students find the final clue and the solution to the codebreaking task. There is also a Let’s Revise section at the end of every Mission.
- Workbook: The Workbook provides extra practice of the grammar and vocabulary items presented in each Students’ Book unit. Special quizzes, games and puzzles ensure the young students are kept interested and motivated. There are also Detective Nick mystery stories in the skills lessons, and Be Careful! exercises which are also hosted by Detective Nick.
- Grammar Book: The Grammar Book follows the Students’ Book lesson by lesson and provides further details of the structure as well as extra practice activities. There are clear grammar tables with explanations in Greek, and there is a Review section at the end of every Mission. Each grammar point is presented through an amusing cartoon featuring Detective Nick.
- Companion: The Companion is a lesson by lesson guide to the vocabulary in the Students’ Book. The Greek translation and an example sentence are given for every word. Extra features make the Companion an invaluable component of the series.
- Test Book: There are Mission tests for every unit, testing grammar and vocabulary, as well as skills tests for every second unit. There are also mid-year, end-of-year and final tests, which cover grammar and vocabulary as well as reading and writing. There are A and B versions of all the Mission tests and the Progress tests.
- Teacher’s Resource Book: The Teacher’s Resource Book has clear and practical suggestions for every lesson, as well as ideas for extra activities. Answers are overprinted. At the back of the Teacher’s Resource Book, there are photocopiable activities, games, quizzes and two plays.
- Class CDs: All the Discover Words vocabulary is included on the class CDs, as well as presentation dialogues and reading texts, songs and raps.
- Students’ e-Book: The Students’ e-Book includes all the Students’ Book spreads, audio files (except the listening exercises) and there are also extra self-correcting interactive exercises and Top Secret games for each Mission. In addition there are some video clips, a pronunciation guide and the lesson by lesson word list.
Suggestions
- Before beginning the course, it is recommended that you read the introductory section of the Teacher’s Resource Book. It gives you a clear overview of the course, as well as providing more detail about some of the standard classroom procedures which will prove useful in teaching Top Secret to your students.
- It is advisable before each lesson to read the corresponding pages in the Teacher’s Resource Book and collect all the appropriate material needed for the lesson.
