CREW AWARD

kindly presented & sponsored by On the Hoof Distance Training:

Nick Pearshouse

NICK PEARSHOUSE by Caroline Johnson - I met my crew a year and a half ago. He was frightened of horses to the point that when he encountered a very friendly pony in a field who just wanted to say hello, he made a quick exit from the field. He then met Hartley and my new horse Bambi. He spent the next few months becoming very attached to Bambi and Bambi would do anything for Nick. He still wasn’t brave enough to enter Hartley’s stable. The big question arose at the beginning of the season: Will you crew for me? I had arranged to take Hartley to Tilford and ride with Becka and Zeus. Nick had never towed a horse trailer, he wasn’t overly brave with Hartley, and certainly had never crewed before.

NICK PEARSHOUSE’S nomination continued: So it was agreed that Madeleine would train him on course. A week before the ride, I asked “Can you share the crewing with Becka’s crew and crew for Zeus too?” OK, so I dropped him in the deep end. He did a fantastic job. He never missed a crew stop for the rest of the season and remembered directions to some stops like ‘turn left at the house with funny colour bricks’, or pub names were also well remembered. Nick also had a few experiences with my truck, from covering it in mud on the outside, to covering the inside in sugar beet as he got lost on an off road 4x4 track. Nick met lots of other friendly crews, picking up hints and tips along the way. He then crewed for myself and Madeleine and took Bambi in to vetting doing a really good job. Sadly I lost Bambi unexpectedly due to colic. Nick came with me to Bell Equine and for both of us it was a long and emotional night. We carried on for the rest of the season with Nick becoming more confident with Hartley, feeding him, going in his stable, and even putting his travel boots on with Hartley kicking at the same time. My stress head was rubbish at final vettings which affected Hartley’s heart rate, so Nick took him in for the rest of the season (the last 6 rides), no eliminations for high pulse and 4 gradings were the result. After sleeping in a tent in the freezing cold at Royalties, with me adding extra crew stops at short notice, he got me and Hartley through 64k over 2 days with a Grade 1 and a Grade 2. It has taken Hartley 7 years to get a Grade 1! A superstar crew definitely worth crew of the year. CarolineJohnson

THE CREW AWARD NOMINATIONS

Unfortunately they couldn’t all win the trophy – but are all very deserving, highly valued and hugely appreciated!

EVA BORBAS

I would like to nominate my crew, Eva Borbas, for the crew award. She is my rock. Without her help I could not compete. She does everything, packing the car and trailer, all the driving, grooming, tacking up, trot ups, plus crewing us on the ride, and so much more that as a para rider I could not do on my own. Although from a horsey background, Eva had no experience of endurance beforehand, but now is a competent crew who also helps me crew other people when we arefree.-RebeccaNorthover

I would like to nominate Eva, Becca Northover’s crew. She is amazing. Not only does she crew for Becca, she also helps out others that ride with Becs. Nothing seems to phase her. Eva is great. She has to sort out the horse in the morning and post ride, organise the medication and ensure she has it on time to keep Bec going, whilst still having everything in place for the crewing role. I rode with Becs a couple of times this year and it is not easy for either of them to do this. It would be nice for Eva to have recognition for her work anddedication.

PETER RALPH

I wish to nominate my husband Peter Ralph for the crew award this year. This will be the 5th year running that he has crewed for me and the 3rd for my riding buddy Leonie Wheeler. Peter has been to every ride with us providing his care and support at each one. This is not just providing sloshes and water for the horses but also food and drink for us at each crew point and after the ride. Apart from the inevitable running about to get us to and from the secretary and vettings with the minimum of fuss, Peter also drives us to and from the rides. This can be a feat in itself as this usually involves travelling along what must be the most un-trailer friendly roads of East Sussex, especially the Snail Trail A21! During the past 5 years he has also maintained our Shogun tow car and the trailer – he has a much diminished bank balance to reflect this! This award will be my way of saying thank you for always being there for me. I am so lucky to see that cheery face as I ride to the next crew point. SandraRalph

JAMES DICKINSON

Unfortunately, although this season got off to a good start for James, horses will be horses and it all went a bit downhill. But never once did he complain or say “I wish I was riding”. No, instead my ‘super crew’ has followed me up and down this country, crewing me on three very different horses in some very different competitions over a distance of 1,434 kilometres. Those of you that know me will know that I get very nervous before and during any competitions. This was affecting my horses at the vetting and this added with my lack of ability to trot up after 120km put me in a big dilemma when the dreaded 160km word was brought up! But James told me not to worry as he would trot Layla for me. Well, eight months later and I have not been to one vetting this season – see, I told you he was supercrew!

No task is too big or too small for James. Most of the time you don’t even have to ask and he’s already done what I was going to ask him to do. I’m forever being told to sit down, shut up and eat in vet gates, and I tell you that at vet gate 5 of a 160km you become very grateful for this! James also always thinks outside the box and makes the impossible possible. Take the Red Dragon 2 day 160km for instance: after day 1 I had awful blisters on my feet and walking was interesting, but I really wanted to go and check on Layla. So James says, ‘no problem, hop in’, as he has found a wheelbarrow to push me down to the stables in! Talking of Red Dragon, James decided that he would drive me down on Friday morning after I had finished college, so that Layla could travel down on Thursday and recover from the journey. Then he drove me back on Sunday night so that I could be back in college on Monday morning. See, not only does he think of me, he thinks of my horses, and also of keeping my parents and college happy!! I really want him to know how grateful I am for everything he has done for me this season because without him 1km wouldn’t have been possible, let alone 1,434km, and this award would go some way to showing himthis.
