Summer School Math

This summer, my math class is made up of students who need credit for either Algebra 1 or Geometry. So, to accommodate this situation I will be running class a little differently, using a “modified flipped classroom” model.

I have made lessons for the students to watch and take notes. Students will then complete part(s) of a study guide each day that correspond with the lesson(s) they watched. At the end of the week, they will need to take the test for that unit. The next week, students will do the next unit. Four weeks of summer school, four units to complete.

I will be available to answer questions about the lessons, do extra examples as needed, or assist students with the study guide problems. However, I will not be teaching each lesson to each student individually. Struggling with math is completely understandable and something that we can work together to overcome, but laziness is not. This model requires students to take responsibility for their work and effort, however it has proven to be more successful with students who struggle with math. This is not a “just show up each day and get credit” type of class. Students will have to take notes, complete each study guide, and do well enough on the tests.

Grading:

Notes 25%

Study Guide 25%

Tests 50%

This class will be pass/fail, so students who earn a 60% or better will pass the class, and receive their half-credit.

I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for each student to watch each lesson, write down notes, and then complete the study guide. Those items count for half of their grade, meaning it is impossible to pass without doing them. We have 3 hours every day for them to complete these items, so there is more than enough time. Should you have any questions, please feel free to contact me anytime.
