The STeLR process aligns closely with the LTIF process for 2013 and is intended to provide an entry point for future grants. Applicants who are awarded an LTIF grant will not be eligible for a STeLR grant in the same year for the same project.

Submission Guidelines

Proposals must:

  • be submitted as a single word document
  • be submitted in A4 format using Arial 11pt font with 2cm margins
  • be saved in the following format ‘stelr11_school_surname’
  • be endorsed by the Head of School (or equivalent)
  • Include emails from project members, acknowledging their support and willingness to participate.

We are calling for proposals which support the strategic directions outlined in‘Where Bold Hopes Can Be Realised: A Red Paper on RMIT’s Strategic Plan 2011 – 2015’and will allow RMIT educational offerings to:

  • be global in reach and impact;
  • be work-relevant and industry-partnered;
  • make a difference to urban environments; and
  • Apply technology in ways that are innovative and improve student learning outcomes.

Applicants should base their proposal on priority areas derived from the RMIT Strategic Plan.

  • enhancing the student cohort experience
  • improving student retention
  • embedding ‘design thinking’ and technology into the curriculum to develop innovative programs
  • designing or redesigning sustainable offshore programs
  • redesigning programs and/or courses for flexible delivery modes, including Open Universities Australia
  • designing or redesigning programs and/or courses in high impact areas
  • implementing AQF and TEQSA requirements
  • redesigning curricula around new learning spaces
  • enhancing sessional staff professional development
  • using learning and teaching standards to improve the student experience and outcomes in all locations
  • Promoting and supporting indigenous participation in tertiary education.

Note: When framing your budget please take into account information in the section detailing implications for other groups. Don’t include expenditure or work by other groups unless you have confirmed it with them.

  1. Ethics Approval

To avoid unwanted delays in commencing your project, applicants are required to complete and attach a completed Ethics Checklist.

  • The checklist will allow you to identify the ethical issues associated with your research and assess the level of risk associated with your research.
  • Completing the checklist will assist your project planning, timelines, etc.
  • Although the checklist will direct you to the appropriate ethics application form, you are NOT required to complete an ethics application form until (and unless) your STeLR project is approved.

ATTACH: Once you have completed the checklist, please print off and attach to your STeLR grant application the response you receive from the Ethics Committee.

  1. Eligibility criteria

Does the project proposal:

  • Address at least one strategic objective from the RMIT Strategic Plan?
  • Relate to one of the RMIT priorities of being global, urban and connected?
  • Have a budget compliant with accounting standards and which use current salary scales and on-costs?
  • Show evidence of consultation with relevant stakeholders including the School Finance Manager and service units where relevant?
  1. Selection criteria

How well does the proposal rate in terms of:

  • Demonstration of clear potential to improve student learning experiences, outcomes and employment opportunities
  • Evidence of a clear return on investment, by demonstrating the potential for application in areas of the university beyond their immediate context
  • Demonstration of the ability to deliver project outcomes within approved timeframes and with requested resources (table format)
  • Demonstration of the need for the project, including reference to previous relevant projects, published literature and L&T context
  • Demonstration of sound project design and methodology
  • Demonstration of how the impact of the project will be evaluated (e.g. by improved data in PARS or by improved CES)
  • Demonstration of how knowledge and best practice from the project will be shared and disseminated
