National Seeds Corporation (NSC)

The National Seed Corporation Limited (NSC) is a Government of India Undertaking. “Mini Ratna’’ category-1 Company under the administrative control of the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare.Government of India. It was set up in March, 1963 and started functioning from July,1963.

The NSC was established to organise the development of a sound seed industry in India, and as a first step towards that direction, to function as a foundation seed production, stocking organisation.

The main objective set before it, inter-alia, were:

  • To carry on in India the production, drying, storing, distribution and transportation of agriculture seeds.
  • To enter into agreement with individuals, co-operative societies, corporations and government agencies in the growing, processing, drying, storing, distribution, transporting and selling of agriculture seeds.
  • To undertake by inspection and any other means, seed quality control measure in all facets of seed business carried on behalf of or co-operation with the Corporation.
  • To store and stockpile reserve supply of any seed needed for improvement of agriculture in India.

Services Provided by NSC :The NSC has pioneered the Indian Seed Industry by virtue of its efficiently organising the seed industry over the last 54 years, best expertise is available with the NSC in the following field and are available to interested parties on charge basis:

Foundation seed production,

Certified seed production,

Seed certification,

Seed quality control,

Seed processing, handing and packaging,

Seed marketing,

Information management and communication,

Sales promotion and advertising , public relations & publicity,

Project formulation and project management,

Training,

Consultancy services in all the above disciplines.

The NSC undertakes thefoundation and certified seed production of nearly 600 varieties consisting of 60 crops through its farms and registered seed growers. There are 6 Farms & about 8500 seed growers all over the country who undertake the seed production at different agro-climate conditions.

There are 10 Regional Offices, 8 Farms,66 Area, 2 Liaison Offices and 4 Quality Control Laboratory spread all over the country. In the seed production, emphasize is given for the production of oil seeds, pulses and hybrids including vegetables. A strict Quality Control is ensured to maintain the seed quality by undertaking internal quality check . NSC has established four Quality Control Laborotories one each at New Delhi, Secunderabad, Bhopal and Suratgarh (STL) to undertake seed testing to maintain the quality. Besides production and distribution of quality seeds, NSC is also involved in the production of tissue culture plants like banana and supplies seedling/ sapling of fruits crops by procurements from the MOU partners. Marketing of tuber, corn are also undertaken by the corporation. Seed marketing is carried out through three channels namely sale through dealers, sale of seed and minikit supply to the state Government & Govt. of India and sale through own sale counters. There are about 2800 dealers in the corporation who account for more than 70% of the sale turn over.

With the lunching of the national seed Project from 1974, NSC has assured the role of a key leader to develop the seed industry in the country on sound lines. Specifically NSC has contributed in the establishment of various State Seed Corporation under NSP.

The NSC plays a key role in the implementation of various schemes of the Govt. of India like “National Mission on oilseeds and Oil Palm (NMOOP)” and in the Implementation of “National Food Security Mission”. It also plays a key role in the introduction of new varieties of the farmers by supplying minikits of number of recently released varieties having superior performance. It also provides technical support to the seed producing agencies including State Seed Corporations through training personnel involved in the seed production in these organizations. NSC is the nodal agency for the processing plants and storage godowns in different crops/varieties that are meant to meet the demand that arises during natural calamities like flood, drought etc. NSC also takes care to meet the demand for quality seeds of the farmers in the interior part of the country like North Eastern States and other hilly regions where no other seed producers are interested to reach.

  • Monitoring availability of Breeder, Foundation and Certified seeds of all India verities and ensuring timely availability thereof.
  • Setting up adequate processing facility to ensure timely processing of seeds.
  • Setting up adequate processing as well as proper storing capacity to ensure proper storing of row seed, processed seed and reserve stock.
  • Undertake field inspections, periodical quality checks as well as testing of seed to ensure quality of seeds.
  • Appointing co-operatives as far as possible to distribute seeds throughout the country.
  • Making availability seeds to deficit states in time and in sufficient quantities.
  • Imparting training to personnel engagement in various activities of seed industry.
