VI  INFORMATION ITEM– Laurel & Krystal: report back on experience at CSSC

Sustainability Convergence at UC Berkeley

Chair O’Brien yields the floor to Krystal Phaneuf and she highlights the following:

·  It was run by realfoodchallenge.org – they come on campuses and help create a more sustainable food environment on campus.

·  This company is effective in getting contracts that require school’s to have organic food on campus.

o  She believes that the UC’s just signed an agreement stating that they must have 20% sustainable food products by 2020 and they’re trying to work with the CSU system to get the same thing.

·  They’re trying to get contacts from realfoodchallenge.org to work with Aramark to get this initiative to work.

·  College students work for this organization (realfoodchallenge.org)

·  The contact for this area, from the organization, is from Oakland and she seems to be interested in working with them to help this move forward.

o  The contact told them that a campus on the East Coast successfully worked with Aramark to get a Farmer’s Market on their campus.

·  They should look into seeing how long their contract with Aramark is for.

Chair O’Brien states that this event was put on by the California Student Sustainability Coalition and they discuss sustainability issues and how to bring the discussed ideas to campuses.

·  She further discusses that she went to a ‘Zero Waste Seminar’ at the event, where she learned:

o  UC Berkeley has a reuse program that’s under the umbrella of the recycling department where they have reuse stations all over their campus.

o  UC Berkeley hosts clean-up days, like the one they’re trying to have, campus-wide, at the end of May, but Berkeley’s is done periodically throughout the year hall by hall. She states that their program has been really successful and she’d like for the students from UC Berkeley that presented at the seminar to come to CSUEB to help get the students excited here.

·  She discusses that she went to another workshop that had to do with ‘Divesting of Fossil Fuels Campaign:’

o  A lot of Universities have large investments in fossil fuel stocks and they’re making a statement saying that they’re not going to invest in it anymore. She states that this could be another possible campaign for CSUEB for next year.

·  Krystal Phaneuf states that they should have more multicultural activities on campus other than Hip-Hop shows.

VII  DISCUSSION ITEM– Earth Week Re-cap

·  The committee asks the volunteers whether or not they attended the Earth Week events and what they saw that pertained to Earth Week and if they didn’t go to the events, why they didn’t attend the events.

·  The committee discusses possibly having actual people out promoting the events to get more people involved.

·  Chair O’Brien states that she attended the RAW Earth Week Re-cap meeting earlier in the day and the big take-a-way from that was that they need to plan way in advance; start planning in fall quarter, which could give them more organization and bigger events. Also, that food should be implemented next year in the event.

·  The committee also discusses possibly having a table out promoting the club during Greek Week.

·  The committee discusses things that worked during Earth Week:

o  T-shirts – need more T-shirts for next year

o  Rock wall – had ~ 76 students climb

o  DJ

o  Having the info and prize booth’s where students answered questions about their habits

·  Chair O’Brien mentions about possibly getting engineering students to set up a bike powered event. For example, they could have their own bike powered smoothies, or band.

·  Chair O’Brien highlights the following:

o  The data collected from the questionnaire will be compiled and presented.

o  Tangerines were a great idea.

o  It was great having the President speak and the seed planting.

o  She captured the President speech with her camera phone and it will be transcribed.

o  Councilman Mark Salinas attended the event it showed a great unity between the city of Hayward and the university.

o  She is going to create a montage for the sustainability tree at the RAW.

o  Michael Lee suggested looking at class schedules next year to coordinate accordingly.

o  She has been trying to contact a managing representative to host an event with housing.

o  Invite more organizations next year.

o  It was a successful event for being the first earth week.

o  Integrate sustainability all throughout the year rather than just on one week.

o  Heather, a Diversity staff member mentioned to have an Earth Month, as one week is stressful on the staff.

o  Hopes to have professionals from different green industries sit in a panel.

·  The committee discusses strategic promotions tactics for future events.

33:01

VIII  DISCUSSION ITEM– Looking Ahead: Drafting sustainability policy and other ideas for remainder of spring quarter.

Chair O’Brien highlights the following:

·  There is an existing resolution that was passed in 2009.

·  She obtained a copy of the resolution and will upload it to the Facebook group page for everyone to view.

·  The task is to modify the existing resolution.

·  ED Saffold suggested ratifying the resolution to leave room for the next incoming board to make a policy.

The committee agrees to work on the resolution till the next committee meeting.
