The Southampton Practical Cardiac MRI Course
SouthamptonGeneralHospital
22nd-26th June 2015
Course Information
This 5-day course is now in its 5th year and covers the theory and practical applications of cardiac MRI (CMR).It is designed for a small number of delegates to allow for hands-on workstation experience, small group tutorials and live scanning sessions – the emphasis being on developing the practical skills and knowledge to perform CMR. The course includes 14 hours of didactic lectures, 4 hours of observed live case scanning and 13 hours of workstation based tutorials and case reviews. The program covers the physics of basic MR through to advanced cardiac techniques including the practical application of the theory to optimise image acquisition. Clinical topics covered include: cardiac anatomy and function, late gadolinium enhancement, cardiomyopathies, basic congenital heart disease, and stress imaging with both adenosine and dobutamine.
Siemens provide the workstations for the afternoon sessions, with one workstation being shared between 2 delegates. These sessions will cover CMR post-processing techniques as well as approximately 50 case reviews. Cases not reviewed during the course sessions will be provided electronically for private study.
Target Audience
The course is aimed at Radiologists and Cardiologists with no or limited previous experience in CMR who wish to gain the practical skills and theoretical knowledge to perform successful CMR examinations. It is appropriate for both consultant grade clinicians and trainees.
Educational Objectives
- Understanding of MRI physics as applied to CMR
- Principles of performing a successful and safe CMR examination
- Knowledge of the role of CMR in clinical practice and appropriate indications
- Practical skills to perform CMR post-processing including LV & RV function analysis and flow analysis
- Knowledge of the indications and contraindications for Stress CMR and to perform and report Stress CMR
- Review and analysis of clinical CMR cases
The lectures and clinical cases can contribute towards SCMR accreditation and training logbooks for the Cardiology and Radiology training programs. Certificates of completion of the course and clinical case logbook will be issued.
30 CME level points have previously been awarded for this course and have been applied for.
Faculty
The course will be delivered by a team of consultants, physicists and radiographers, with extensive CMR experience and long history of running successful courses. The Physics course will once again be delivered by Dr John Ridgway who has an international reputation and expertise in teaching CMR physics.
