New Desktop

Overwhelmed by open windows? Windows 7 comes with three simple yet powerful new features called Shake, Peek, and Snap to help you instantly clear through desktop clutter.

View All your Open Windows with Peek

Peek gives you the power to peer past all your open windows straight to the Windows 7 desktop. Simply point to the right edge of the taskbar—and watch open windows instantly turn transparent, revealing all your hidden icons and gadgets. To quickly reveal a buried window, point to its taskbar thumbnail. Now only that window shows on the desktop.

Jump Lists

Jump Lists—take you right to the documents, pictures, songs, or websites you turn to each day. To open a Jump List, just right-click a program icon on the Windows7 taskbar. You will also find them on the Start menu.)

Shake

Ever need to cut through a cluttered desktop and quickly focus on a single window? Just click a pane and give your mouse a shake. Voila! Every open window except that one instantly disappears. Jiggle again—and your windows are back.

Snap

Snap is a quick (and fun) new way to resize open windows, simply by dragging them to the edges of your screen. Depending on where you drag a window, you can make it expand vertically, take up the entire screen, or appear side-by-side with another window.

Action Center

Action Center consolidates message traffic from key Windows maintenance and security features, including Windows Defender and User Account Control. If Windows requires your attention, the Action Center icon appears in the taskbar. Click it and you’ll see both alerts—and suggested fixes for any problems. You can fine-tune your choices in Control Panel.

Windows Search

Start typing into the Start menu search box and instantly see a list of relevant documents, pictures, music, and e-mail on your PC. Results are grouped by category and contain highlighted keywords and text snippets to make them easier to scan.

Windows New Taskbar

In Windows 7 you can pin favorite programs anywhere on the taskbar for easy access. You can rearrange the icons on the taskbar any way you like by clicking and dragging. Finally, there are new ways to preview windows. Point to a taskbar icon to see a thumbnail preview of open files or programs. Then, move your mouse over a thumbnail to preview the window full-screen. You can even close windows from the thumbnail previews—a big time saver.

Snipping Tool

Snipping Tool captures a screen shot of anything on your desktop, like a picture or a section of webpage.

Snip a whole window, a rectangular section of the screen, or draw a freehand outline with your mouse or tablet pen (or your finger, if you're using a PC with a touchscreen). Then you can annotate, save, or e-mail the image using buttons right in the Snipping Tool window.

Personalizing Your Computer

You can add a personal touch to your computer by changing the computer's theme, color, sounds, desktop background, screen saver, font size, and user account picture. You can also select specific gadgets for your desktop.
