PUBLIC SERVICES
Pre Enrolment Task
2017
In order to prepare you for BTEC Public Services, we have set you the following task. We will be using the information you collect for this task in the first few lessons. Make sure that you have the work with you to hand in for the first lesson, preferably printed off on paper.
To gain entry into any public service a level of fitness has to be demonstrated, both when in role and as part of the interview process.
Task 1
Research and make notes on the fitness tests that you must complete as part of the entry and interview process for the 5 public services in the list below.
- The Police
- The Army
- TheNavy
- The Fire Service
- The Prison Service
Task 2
Below is a list of fitness components.
- Speed
- Power
- Muscular Endurance
- Flexibility
- Strength
- Stamina
- Body Composition
Create a booklet to be given to new recruits in any if the public services, that explains in detail a fitness test that measures each of the components above. Include diagrams and pictures that will aid the explanation and ensure the new recruits can carry out the test effectively and efficiently.
You may find the information to help you with the tasks on the internet and also in text books. Make sure that if you use information from either of these that you do not copy the work and that all of your work is written in your own words.

Public Services Kit List:Our kit list is to not only remind you what the BTEC Subsidiary Diploma in Public Services is about but also to let you know any essential items you will need for the course.
You will study total of 6 units across 2 years.
In year 1 you will study:
- Government, Policies and the PS
- Leadership and Teamwork in the PS
- Physical Prep, Health and Lifestyle for the PS
- Citizenship, Diversity and the PS
- Police Powers
- Behaviour in Public Sector Employment
The course is continually assessed through written assignments, projects, consultations, presentations and practical assessments. You will develop a responsible and co-operative approach to working on your own and as part of a group, developing skills such as team work and communication alongside your academic skills. The course uses practical activities, presentations and involvement with local public services wherever possible to enhance the learning experience.
How we work: We aim to use a variety of learning techniques that are suitable to the learners we teach and the learning styles that work well for them. This may include discussions, interactive web based learning, group work and practical tasks. We have high expectations in the department because we want the best for you.
What we expect from you: We expect you to come to lessons prepared and ready to learn, this includes having the necessary equipment for the lesson, whether that be pen and paper or practical kit. We expect you to be on time to classes and to fully engage in activities that are taking place. Remember they are for you benefit! We also expect you to put effort in outside of the classroom through completing tasks, stay up to date with current issues involving the public services and reading around the topic to develop your knowledge and understanding.

The Gym Instructor course is the first step on the fitness career ladder. It is designed to provide you with the skills and knowledge to effectively support a variety of gym-goers in achieving their fitness goals. Whether it's monitoring progress, providing nutritional advice or getting to grips with the latest in gym technology, once qualified, you'll be ready and waiting to get the nation moving! Career opportunities for Gym Instructors are constantly growing. Once you find your feet, you may choose to further your skills, or even consider specialising in a niche area to improve your chances of success in the fast-paced world of fitness. Once you're qualified as a Gym Instructor, you can move on to become a Personal Trainer, Exercise Referral Specialist or train professional athletes as a Fitness Coach.
