Alaska Performance Scholarship: Governor Parnell proposed the Alaska Performance Scholarship (APS) in 2010 as an invitation to excellence, extended to Alaska students, parents, and educators. The APS is a merit-based scholarshipthat provides an opportunityfor any future Alaska high school graduate who meets a core set of requirements to receive funding to pursue college and/or career trainingin Alaska.

My Steps to Qualify for the APS

▪Develop a plan for completingthe curriculumrequired for yourclass year with your high school counselor.

▪Work to achieve the highest GPA you can.

▪Prepare for and take an SAT and/or ACT practice test. Sign up to take the SAT and/or ACT early,so you can retake them if you want to better your score. List your high school as a recipientof your score. Your scores need to be at the high schools prior to graduation so that is another reason to take your test earlier in the school year. Also, see what your options are based onWorkKeys scores. Make sure the school district has your social security code on record.

▪Research qualifying Alaska colleges and training programs and choose the one that’s right for you. Apply early.

▪Log in to the Alaska Student Aid Portal (ASAP), and filethe Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), as early as possible after January 1 the year you want to use the award. Check back in to ASAPregularly to review your status.

Don’t forget to research other financial aidavailable to you.

Make sure you have filled out an information release form with your school. This usually happens during registration.

Parent Connect—the on-line district service that allows parents to see their student’s schedule, monitor student’s progress, access quarterly and semester grades, and view current contact information isagain available. This is a great way to be informed about what is happening in your student’s classroom. Be informed early! If you utilized Parent Connect last year, you can continue to use the same pin and pass- word information this year. Your student should also be able to access their grades as well through their student account. If you still need your access information, or if you are unable to locate your information from last year, please contact the curriculum office at 742-7008.

NCAA INFORMATION If you are planning on playing a Division I or II sport in college, speak to your counselor early in high school to make sure that you are taking the appropriate classes for NCAA eligibility. Visit the web site and follow the prompts to complete the application.

WUE @ You may qualify for the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program if you meet the necessary requirements. You can attend specific colleges at a reduced tuition rate. Submit your college application as early as possible to ensure consideration because the many programs are based on a space available basis. Most schools have no specific application for the program. Use the college’s admission form and place at the top in red letters "WUE APPLICATION/major area of study" (area of study must be listed in booklet). If you are applying electronically, there may be a box to check for WUE consideration. If there is no box, you will need to notify the school to let them know you want WUE consideration. Please visit the above Internet site for current information.

Scholarship Deadlines:

As we get scholarship applications, we will post them to the boards across from the CRC office, put them on the weekly announcements, and make announcements at school. More scholarships will come in as the year goes on. In the meantime students could be working on getting their letter of recommendations.

About the scholarship application process: Read all materials carefully. Follow instructions to the letter. Do not procrastinate about completing an application. Set a personal deadline date a week earlier than the posted deadline so you don’t make last minute mistakes.
