Review minutes from previous meeting
Outcome:National Standards/guidelines feedback- Carolyn still on leave, no feedback to report on. 4 library services only responded to guidelines
Action
Agenda Item 1:
Name:Personal safety alarms- Cath suggested we look at Daniel Morecroft app, for personal safety when alone. The choices were discussed – panic buttons, portable security kits, alarmed vehicle? Particularly risky in remote rural areas. Cath will enquire what is used by RDNS, MOW, Home Help etc. Also smoking is OH&S issue.
Agenda Item 2:
Name: Volunteers vs paid staff – Sue Melton now looking at using volunteers to do shelving, etc. Discussion over “core business”. In UK all libraries manned by volunteers. YPRL have volunteers doing shelving, holds list etc. Not so other library services in Melbourne.
Agenda Item 3:
Name:Partnerships with Council volunteers – arising from feedback that housebound clients want more than just a delivery of books, really appreciate a chat. Membership expectations per population? 42% Geelong
Agenda Item 4:
Name:Future of HLS - Importance of consideration of partnerships with technological mediums to meet electronic challenge. Partnerships could be considered with primary school students to teach seniors in the use of Ipads etc. Demand for DVDs for Broadband for Seniors etc. Rural area – study of use of Ipads with HLS, great success, clients felt connected and empowered.
Equity of Access – resistance to getting WIFI into home for those cost conscious. What do they want to use it for? What size memory would they need?
However, less cost to government long term, as users less likely to suffer from dementia and isolation – related conditions..
YPRL piloting using IPADS for seniors in some of their programmes.
Agenda Item 5:
Name : Lyn Roberts – Community care Inclusion – Information and therapy kitsat no cost to the community. Therapy items for borrowers with dementia, autism and carers.Partnerships with Alzheimers Asscn, Caroline Springs and Melton libraries. Theseitems can be accessed through library for 6 week borrowing period. Eligibility conditions apply.
