What do I need to file Homestead Property Tax and Safe Senior Tax Refunds?

(Clerk’s office has this information if the claim was filed in our office)
Banking information if you would like to have your refund directly deposited into your bank account
All information regarding any2017HOUSEHOLD INCOME
(for every person who lived in the home even if they file separate taxes)
Some examples are:
Taxable and nontaxable wages, salaries, self-employment, unemployment compensation (W2’s, 1099, or annual statement of benefits)
Interest and dividends
Earned income credit from 2016
Social Security, SSI benefits, retirement, pension, disability payments(SSA 1099),
Alimony, child support, foster home care payments
Jury duty payments, gambling winnings
Welfare, food stamps, TAF, general assistance
If you qualify under the disability provision you will need to know:
The date(day, month and year)in which you first became eligible for disability. You may obtain this information from the Social Security office.
All household members’ personal information, including name, date of birth, and social security number.
Please note: If you will be filing a Federal or State Income Tax Return for 2017, your Tax Preparer must also file your Homestead.

The Chautauqua County Clerk’s Office will begin assisting citizens filing their Homestead Property Tax and Safe Senior Tax Refunds on Wednesday, January 10, 2018 from
9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Tuesday-Friday through April 15, 2018. For your convenience you may call (620)725-5800 to schedule an appointment.
Documents required to file your claim are:

2017 property tax statement which reflects your name as “owner”
Proof of 2017 annual income for the individual filing and all members of the household.
Some examples of income are: Taxable and nontaxable wages or salaries, self-employment, unemployment compensation(W2’s, 1099, or annual statement of benefits), Social Security, SSI benefits, retirement, pension, disability payments (SSA 1099), Interest and dividends, alimony, child support, foster home care payments, fury duty payments, gambling winnings, welfare, food stamp, TAF, and general assistance.
The Homestead Property Tax Refund is a rebate program for the property taxes paid by homeowners. The refund is based on a portion of the property tax paid on a Kansas resident’s home. The maximum refund is $700.
To qualify you must be a Kansas resident, living in Kansas the entire year. Your total household income must be $34,000 or less.
You must also meet one of the following requirements:
- You are 55 or older, born before January 1, 1962; OR
- You must have been totally and permanently disabled or blind during the entire year, regardless of your age; OR
- You must have had a dependent child living with you all of last year who was born beforeJanuary 1, 2017, and was under the age of 18 the entire year.
Safe Senior Property Tax Refundis a program that is administered under the provisions of the Kansas Homestead Act (property tax refund) by the Kansas Department of Revenue. Safe Senior is also referred to as, "Kansas Property Tax Relief for Low Income Seniors". The refund is 75 percent of the 2017 general property tax paid or to be paid - as shown of the 2017 real estate tax statement for the residence in which the claimant lived in 2017.
To qualify you must be a Kansas resident all of 2017, who owned and occupied a home in Kansas during 2017, who was aged 65 years or older for all of 2017 (born before January 1, 1952) and who had a "household income" of $19,500 or less in 2017.
You may claim either a Safe Senior or Homestead refund, but not both. If you are filing a Federal or State income tax return for 2017, your tax preparer must also file your Homestead.
Homestead Refund Advancement Program
This program provides eligible homeowners with the opportunity to apply a portion of their anticipated Homestead refund to help pay the first half of their 2018 property tax.If the box is checked on the 2017 K-40H, the 2018 homestead advancement will be sent directly from Kansas Department of Revenue to the County Treasurer. This eliminates the need for the homestead claimant to physically deliver the homestead eligibility letter to the County Treasurer.
