MS. BRADEN – RELIGION I – 2011 – ABSTINENCE WEBQUEST

Introduction

Abstaining from sexual intercourse is becoming a more popular choice among young people these days. This webquest explores the issue of abstinence and asks participants to identify and then consider the reasons for waiting longer before they engage in sexual intercourse.

Task

The task of this webquest is to prepare a three-fold brochure for your school that presents the arguments for abstaining from sexual intercourse until a person is in a long term, committed relationship (marriage)

Process and Steps

1.  Read the brief section Reasons to Wait and then read the article entitled: Virginity: A Very Personal Decision

2.  Review the articles from a previous assignment

3.  The next step in this webquest is to gather the facts related to abstinence. Read the following articles and fact sheets and compile the arguments for deciding to abstain from sexual intercourse (and other intense forms of sexual activity) until it fits with your life plans and you are married. Remember to use the information from class on STD’s, contraception and abortion. Include moral arguments found from church documents. Some areas to consider are:

·  medical, health reasons

·  emotional, psychological reasons

·  philosophical, ethical, spiritual, moral and values related reasons

·  social, economic and career related reasons

The assigned readings are: (remember, the specific selections are approved by Ms. Braden. There are links within each site that may not express the Church’s or Ms. Braden’s views. Please stick to the assigned readings. If you come across another site you feel is helpful, please have Ms. Braden view it)

·  Choosing Abstinence

·  Abstinence – Dating but Waiting

·  Should we live boring lives of abstinence?

·  Safe Sex – What does the Evidence Say?

·  Everyone’s doing it – not – Read “Facts about teens & sex” and “To do it or not to do it – that is the Question.”

·

4.  Create a three-fold brochure, design your layout – Title, graphics, font style and size, colors, etc. You will need to decide in your small group who will do which research and section of your brochure. Working as a group, create a brochure for expressing the reasons why young (and older) people should abstain from sexual intercourse and other intense sexual activity until it fits with their life goals/situation and they are married

5.  For Grading read “Abstinence Brochure Rubric”

6.  Hand in your brochure with a cover sheet attached to the brochure with the names of all the people in your group (your names are not to go on the brochure).
