Center Grove HS Varsity Dance Team - CALL OUT MEETING – 2018-2019
- Opening Remarks
- Tryout clinic will be on Friday, April 20 from 5:00-9:00pm in the CGHS West Gym – dancers need to wear tight-fitted clothing (preferably black): leotards, camis, leggings, shorts or capris are acceptable. Bring tennis or hip hop shoes for hip hop. Jazz shoes will be needed for jazz & kick. Hair should be pulled back in a ponytail or bun.
- Tryouts will be on Monday, April 23 from 5:00-9:00pm in the CGHS West Gym – same attire as clinic suggested. Tryouts & clinics are closed to spectators.
- The first name/last initial of those making the Dance Team will be posted on the website on Tuesday, April 24 –
- Judges – Coach, Assistants, Choreographers, dance team alumni
- RDT (Random Drug Testing) Policy – must be signed by all dancers. Adhere to the RDT policy or you will be dismissed from the squad
- All paperwork must be turned in at the tryout clinic – waiver, team application, financial obligation consent, photo & website release, team COC agreement.
- Social Media Monitored – Personal responsibility & expectations of behavior of dance team members
- We are trying to bring together a group of well-rounded athletes to fill the dance team positions. We are looking for hard working candidates with excellent academics, great attitudes, and dance technique.
- Studio Participation
- Highly encouraged no matter where you attend
- We are willing to work around “MAJOR” studio events, if possible (i.e. special choreographer coming in and/or competition). We are NOT willing to work around normal studio time (i.e. typical class) or jobs. You must commit to our games and/or competition events as we cannot work around anything at your studio during these times.
- Everyone must commit to the practice schedule. If you cannot attend practices, games and competitions - please do not audition.
- Explain CG Dance League Classes – Mondays, Wednesdays & Thursdays after team practices

- Each candidate must complete an application, parental consent form, website release form, waiver, Code of Conduct and financial consent form. If your child lives in two households, BOTH parents must sign each form.
- Please read the application carefully as you are committing to the following:
- Practice Schedule
- All home varsity football games if auditioning for Fall (dates posted on website calendar)
- A minimum number of 5 home varsity basketball games if auditioning for Competition Jazz Team (dates TBA)
- A minimum of 5 competitions plus Regionals, Semi State & State if auditioning for Competition Jazz, Kick and/or Hip Hop Team (dates available in September)
- Notify your dance studio you are auditioning and what your commitment is to the CGHS Varsity Dance Team
- Give the appropriate schedules (i.e. practice, football, basketball, competition) to your dance studio and work as soon as they are available. Do not try out for the CGHS Varsity Dance Team if you cannot commit to practice, camps and game schedules.
- Uniforms
- We add to our inventory as more money is available (NOTE: uniforms are the property of CGHS; Team members will be given a set of uniforms, but must return all items at the end of the season; if uniforms are not returned, the Team member will be required to pay for the uniforms in question)
- Dancers are responsible for purchasing their own warm up jacket & leggings, tights, practice clothes, camp clothes, shoes, boots, competitive costumes and accessories. (see Financial Obligations sheet)

- Fall Squad and Competition Teams
- Fall - Performs at home varsity football games (both regular season & post season) and community performance opportunities (season June-Mid November)
- Competition Hip Hop – Performs at some football & basketball games along with 5-8 competitions around the state. (season August-March)
- Competition Kick & Jazz Team – Performs at designated home varsity boys’ basketball games along with 5-8 competitions around the state (season August-March)
- There will be a winter/basketball squad that performs sidelines at 5 home varsity boys’ basketball games. Dancers who compete on the Jazz team will be the dancers for basketball/winter games.

- How many will we take – Fall 10-14; Winter 10-14; Jazz/Kick/Hip Hop –no more than 25
- Freshman-Senior can make the Team; Auditions are closed; clinics are open for video of combinations & technique only

- All Team Practices – July 9, 10, 12, 16, 17, 24, 26 – 9am-11:00am East Balcony - Everyone
- Mandatory Dance Camp – NDA at University of Louisville, KY – All teams July 19-22 Cost: $359.00 per dancer (transportation is provided to the camp – parents will pick up dancers on Sunday, 7/22 from U of L)
- Competition solos & ensembles will be casted after the NDA Camp. Choreography forsolos & ensembles will be placed on dancers in the beginning of September.
- Captains will meet on Monday, July 23- 9-11:30am (place TBD)
- Fall Team Only Practice Schedule in the East Balcony: Starting week of July 31-Oct 31 (depending on football team postseason) Mon & Tues 3-5pm/Wed 2:15-4:15pm
- Competition Team Only Practice Schedule: Starting week of August 1st (until football season ends) – Thursdays 3-5pm
- After football season ends, Competition squads will practice in the HoE: Mon & Tues 3-5pm/ Wed 2:15-4:15pm; some Thursdays 3-5pm
- Dance Team performances
- Try-out for every performance & competition. Dancers will be benched if they do not know or cannot perform choreography or have missed practices. This is for fall, winter and competition teams.
- Fundraisers
- Jr Camp - June 12, 13, 14th – 9:00-11:00am – CGHS West Gym
- Need sponsor(s) for Jr Camp t-shirts ($1,000) & bus transportation to competitions ($2,500)

- What is the IHSDTA –
- Opportunities due to participation in the IHSDTA:
- Recruiting for college dance teams, scholarship opportunities for seniors, publicity, great for college applications. Academic All State Team!
- Competition team members must attend a weekly turns and leaps and ballet class outside of dance team at a qualified dance studio or participate in the CG Dance League..
- Mandatory Off-Campus Dance Camp:
- CGHS Varsity Dance Team will be attending the NDA dance camp at University of Louisville July 19-22nd. Dancers will stay overnight on campus during the three day camp. This is a mandatory camp for all dancers on the squad. More information will be provided at the parent meeting after tryouts. Visit nda.varsity.com for details.
- Varsity Letter Requirements
- Fall Squad – Perform in all routines and attend all home football games including Sectionals during fall break (NOTE: also attends and performs at Lucas Oil if game is scheduled at this location)
- Competition Squad - Competition team will earn a varsity letter if they attend practices & compete at IHSDTA invitationals plus Regionals and State (if team qualifies) and perform at a minimum number of varsity basketball games.
- Numerals will be given with the first varsity letter. A chevron will be given every year to all dance members.
- Captains
- Dancers who can lead with integrity and juggle demands of student life and dance schedules.
- May have one or multiple captains depending on the needs of the coach and team(s).
- Captain applications will be passed out in June. CGDT Coaching Staff will pick captains.
- Expectations
Team members are expected to be leaders in their school. They will be expected to perform at pep sessions, community performances, games and competitions. Dancers must be well rounded individuals that can take direction and corrections graciously. Hard work and determination are a must to be a part of the squad. Potential is recognized at tryouts and some dancers may be placed on a practice squad. A practice squad member will do everything the team is doing. They will be placed on the performance team when the head coach feels that the member has matured in his/her dancing skills.
Please do not try out for the dance team unless you are capable of meeting the financial obligations and commitment needed. All forms MUST be signed and turned in before trying out.
