SABER HOCKEY EXPECTATIONS

I. GENERAL

  • All players, managers, and coaches will always conduct themselves in a first class manner, be encouraging of each other, and have a healthy, positive attitude. We all represent Shakopee Senior High and the Shakopee community.
  • All players, managers and coaches are expected to attend and be on time to all practices, games and team activities. If you are going to be gone, please let coaches know as soon as possible. If a player is removed from practice, this will be deemed as unexcused.
  • All players are to be on the ice when it is ready. Once you step onto the ice you are expected to be moving and ready to practice.
  • All players, managers and coaches are expected to use appropriate language in all practices, games, bus rides and team activities.
  • All players are expected to turn cell phone ”s’’ off when you get to the rink on game days, at team meetings and at team functions.
  • All players are expected to listen when any coach is talking.
  • All players are to address teammates in a positive manner only.
  • All players are to clean the locker room before leaving.
  • All players must be in school by 3rd hour to practice or play in a game unless it is excused i.e. funeral, doctor’s appointment, etc.

The breaking of any of these guidelines could result in:

First offense: the athlete or manager will miss 1 period of the next game.

Second offense: the athlete or manager will miss the next game. The player will be on the bench in street clothes helping with game data. In addition, the player will not return to competition until after a conference with the coaching staff and parent or guardian.

Third offense: the athlete or manager will be dismissed from the hockey program for the remainder of the season.

Bottom Line our 3 Saber Rules

  1. Respect each other.
  2. Respect the coaches.
  3. Respect the game.

II. PHILOSOPHY

Varsity- the coaching staff will attempt to put the most competitive team on the ice regardless of a player’s age or grade. We will look for athletic ability, attitude, and the ability to be a team player when fielding a competitive team. If a younger player is ready to play at this level, she will play. We need to have the right pieces to the puzzle.

Junior Varsity- it is our belief that this program is a developmental program. We believe that every player will and should play to help their development and the development of the total program. Skill development will be the focal point. We will attempt to put players in positions where they can be most successful and help the team. Ideally, no senior will play JV in regards to our developmental philosophy. (But unique situations may occur.) ex. Illness, injury, roster requirements.

WE ARE ALL ONE-whether you are placed on the varsity or junior varsity; no player is cemented in place. Our staff will use both team in creating placement for the next games opportunities.

III. PARTICIPATION ON THE SHAKOPEE GIRLS’ HOCKEY TEAM

  • It is a privilege, not a right.
  • Players must accept all responsibilities in order to be on the team.
  • No one will be accorded equal or guaranteed ice time- being suited up for a varsity game does not guarantee you playing time in that contest.
  • Players must accept their role, work with coaches to improve.

IV. TEAM SELECTION

Choosing the members of the team is the sole responsibility of the coaching staff. We shall provide the following information to all candidates for the team:

  • Extent of tryout period: (11/1 – 11/4)
  • Criteria used to select the team.
  • Number to be selected.
  • Practice commitment if they are selected.
  • Other team commitments.

Team lists for practices will be posted on dry room door by the end of practice on Thursday, November 4th. Lists for the scrimmage will be posted online ( onFriday, November 5th.

V. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ATHLETE

  • Put the teams’ goals, welfare, and success before your own.
  • Attend all practice & strength training sessions on time.
  • Be receptive to coaching.
  • Be responsible for all uniforms and equipment.
  • Represent Shakopee well and follow team expectations.
  • Report all injuries to the trainer and the coach.
  • Use your own water bottle. NO SHARING OF WATER BOTTLES AT ALL!

VI. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE COACH

  • Select the team.
  • Determine the style and philosophy of play.
  • Teach at practice sessions.
  • Determine whom starts and the amount of ice time for players.
  • Establish & enforce team rules & expectations.
  • Always make safety and the athletes; welfare first.
  • Make sure scholastic achievement takes precedent over athletic opportunity.

VII. RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PARENTS

  • Be positive and encourage your daughter.
  • We want only the best for your daughter. Please trust that this is the coaches top priority. We will do everything we can to help your daughter achieve her goals along with team goals.
  • Do not start a phone call or email with “ - - - does not know I am calling…” Please talk with them before you both come to us.
  • Be part of the program- volunteer, be on a committee, simply help make this season special.

VIII. QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS

There is a chain of command that must be followed when addressing concerns

1st step- The player must talk to the coach(s) or captain(s)

2nd step- Meeting between the coaches, parent and player.

3rd step- Meeting between the coaches, parent, player and Activities Director.

*All concerns will be addressed when these steps are followed.

IX. LETTERING

A letter is something athletes earn. There are three different ways to earn a letter:

  • An athlete plays in the equivalent of 1 period per game. (If we play 25 games, the player must play in 25 periods.) In addition, the player or manager must successfully complete the season and be on the final section roster.
  • If the varsity team qualifies for the state tournament, all players will earn a letter if on the tournament playoff roster regardless of time played.
  • Goalies must play in 1/3 of games played.
  • The coaching staff reserves the right to letter any athlete they see fit that do not meet the above 3 situations.

X. OTHER RULES AND REGULATIONS

We as a coaching staff want this to be a safe, fun and enjoyable season for players and parents. Please do not put any undue pressure on players or coaches. If you have any concerns or want to discuss a problem, please observe the 24 hour rule. Please think the issue over for 24 hours and then schedule a meeting.

  • Failure to comply with team rules and expectations shows lack of commitment to the team.
  • For further clarification, please see the Shakopee Student Athletic Handbook.

NOTE: Any infractions of these rules or regulations of the MSHSL by any member of this team will result in disqualification from any in- or-post season honors or awards for the duration of that season i.e. all-conference, all state, captains, team awards, all-academic, junior fest, senior classic, advanced 15,16,17 etc.

XI. CAPTAINS SELECTION AND TEAM AWARD

*Each year the decision to have individual awards will be made by the coaching staff.

  • Team Captains will be voted on by each returning player, but selection will be at the discretion of the coaching staff.
  • All other awards (MVP, Ms. Hustle, and Most Improved) will be voted on by the players.
  • Other individual awards/nominations given by coaching staff (Hobey Baker, Rasmussen, Advanced 15/16/17, Freshman/Sophomore, Junior Fest, Senior Classic)

XII. COMMUNITY SERVICE

It is our goal each year to give back to the community in the way of community service. It will be an expectation to support our youth teams and be involved in any and all team community functions. Team members will be notified as these opportunities present themselves.
