Institute of Chemistry Timisoara of Romanian Academy

______

Brief history

Institute of Chemistry of Romanian Academy was set up in 2003 by the fusion of the Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory of the Romanian Academy with Institute of Chemistry Timisoara.

The roots of the institute are bound with the formation of some research groups in the Chemistry Faculty of Polytechnical Institute Timisoara, in 1948. These groups were the basic nucleus of the Chemistry Department of the Romanian Academy – Timisoara Branch in 1958, which further became an independent institute, namely Centre of Chemistry Timisoara (CCT). The promoter of this development was Academician Coriolan Dragulescu (1907-1977), who became the Center’s first director. CCT was organized in three sections: Inorganic Chemistry, Organic-dyes Chemistry and Organic-phosforic Chemistry departments until 1990 when Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory became a department of the Romanian Academy – Timisoara Branch and organic laboratories formed the Institute of Chemistry Timisoara.

Research directions

Fundamental research in chemistry is the main activity but the scientific research has a wide scope, ranging from a fundamental form to concrete forms of applied research.

The institute was intended to carry out both basic research and applications, the latter consisting mainly on compounds with biological relevance and as potential advanced materials. This basic idea was implemented by bringing together chemists with strong background in inorganic, organic and computational chemistry.

Presentation of the research programmes

1.  Molecular design assisted by computer

2.  Organic and element-organic compounds of fluorine, nitrogen and phosphor. New bioactive compounds.

3.  Structure and reactivity of some inorganic compounds with special properties.

4.  Catalytic activity of hetero-polyoxometallates compounds of Keggin type in oxidation and dehydrogenation reactions
