A Personal Journey Through Borderline Personality Disorder: Understanding the Behaviors and Techniques for Responding: Building a Wall of Compassion

February 24, 2015, 9:30 -4:00 pm, NJPSA/FEA Conference Center, 12 Centre Drive Monroe Township NJ 08831-1564, Presented by Talya Lewis, BA, Peer Educator, 5CEU’s

“This diagnosis scares some of the best mental health professionals. Imagine how it scares those living with it...”

Summary: This unique workshop presents a detailed clinical and personal presentation of borderline personality disorder and self –injury from the perspective of an individual diagnosed with it who is in recovery. As Talya Lewis began to come to terms with her past, both her diagnosis and her treatment, she knew she had to reach out to others. She began by initiating two support groups, one for women who have traits consistent with BPD and one for parents/caregivers to help ease their isolation and to equip them with the education necessary to cope and respond effectively to their loved one. Talya co-developed and authored a manual for an eight week workshop on BPD. As she worked with those struggling with the diagnosis as well as those and their loved one’s coping with BPD, Talya was asked repeatedly by people desperate for help to enter treatment with her. Talya now has a private practice as a successful trauma coach or “lay therapist.”

Through her workshops and remembering her own experiences, the realization of the intense stigma that accompanies BPD spurred a deep desire to educate those working in a clinical setting with individuals carrying this deeply painful diagnosis. It was with this need and interest that Talya began to conduct educational workshops on BPD to clinicians, nurses, social workers, university level students, and anyone with a desire to learn about the defenses and thinking patterns of those affected with BPD. As her final venture, her most cathartic yet most difficult project, Talya is writing her memoir, a deeply moving personal account. With her lived experience, her education, and her lifelong learning about BPD and self-injury, Talya’s workshops offer invaluable personal insight and direct experiences with all nine of the criteria of BPD, including a first person knowledge of self injury.

“Borderline personality disorder is the most highly stigmatized of all mental illnesses. I remember how I was treated before I ended up with a clinician who was not afraid of the disorder, but rather understood it and was willing to treat it. The prognosis for BPD is very good. With an understanding of what motivates the individual, anyone can work with this disorder, helping those suffering from the intense pain that accompanies BPD to move towards a recovery that can last a lifetime.” – Talya Lewis
